Woo!  Tax return!  I can afford needed cat and car maintenance!

Taxes done.  Expecting just over 1200 even with the filing fees for TurboTax and donating about 1/2 my State to domestic abuse shetlers.  Which I think is new.  I don't remember a bunch of charitable refund donation options when I filed last year.

While checking to make sure my actual bank balance is similar to what I think it is I see that I got my AZ tax return.  Which is especially nice since I thought it had come bundled in with my federal refund last month.  Woo unplanned moneys!

Happiness is taking the two clearance rack ties up to the counter and when scanned they show as 75% off instead of the marked 50% off.  Which meant an extra ten in my budget for steaks.  Which were also on sale.

But not everyone is happy with Costco's business strategy. Some Wall Street analysts assert that Mr. Sinegal is overly generous not only to Costco's customers but to its workers as well.

Costco's average pay, for example, is $17 an hour, 42 percent higher than its fiercest rival, Sam's Club. And Costco's health plan makes those at many other retailers look Scroogish. One analyst, Bill Dreher of Deutsche Bank, complained last year that at Costco "it's better to be an employee or a customer than a shareholder."

From a NY Times article on Costco

AC has gone out, repair won't be here until early tomorrow morning. Unpleasant. Also, possibly expensive...

ETA: Just some loose wiring that needed to be reconnected this time. Ahhh the cool blowing air. But my system is looking pretty worn and old...

Taxes all filed. Getting back about the same as last year. Though I somehow paid less for a 2-year car registration then I did for a 1-year one in '10. Weird...

Atomic Comics to close all four of their Valley locations. While they haven't been my main comic's store for awhile now, I did occasionally drop in at the Metrocenter location to look for recent back issues or trades...

Seriously?

So here is the thing. Firefly is being reaired on Canada's equivalent to SyFy or something. And in an interview Nate Fillon said if he won the lottery he'd love to buy the rights himself and start the show again. And so now the diehard Firefly fans are trying to make that happen. Raise something like 300 million so that Fillon can buy the right to it. People are raising funds in various ways...

And that just hurts. I loved Firefly and Serenity. I one piles of tie-in licensed materials. But you know what? ITS A FUCKING TELEVISION SHOW. 300 million that will make a bunch of rich people get richer? Thats not fucking right. If there were a mass petition of letter campaign or whatever to try and rekindle interest in restarting the show that could be one thing. But this is just sad fan self-indulgence. And its even worse if it actually succeeds. The world is full of needy causes to actually help make things less shitty. And people want to raise this kind of money to bring back a TV show...

Mmmm. Sweet, sweet returned tax monies. Now I can pay to have people stick my cat with needles and to make sure my car will continue to be able to stop on demand...

Cost of ticket for driving 23mph in a school zone: $276.60

Total costs for Defensive Driving course to negate ticket and avoid points: $229.95

"Savings": $46.65

Obviously I should have gone much faster so that it at least feels like I'm saving money...

I'm trying to decide if being able to pay bills, put gas in the car, give the family rent money and buy more books and THEN still have plenty of money to get by for 2 weeks is worth putting up with drunks and having no social life. I'm having to say that Yes is the marginal winner...
