Batman: Gotham Knight
May. 12th, 2009 10:34 amExecutive Producer Bruce Timm presents six short films meant to bridge between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. All six are done in Japanese animation styles which is probably the most interesting part. Not that the stories are bad. They're very much better than average Batman stories. But they're not really new ground Batman stories. Worth a watch for casual Bat-fans at the very least...
Pixar Short Films
Apr. 27th, 2009 10:30 amWhile this collection has that one with the cute desk lambs and "Jack-Jack Attack" and a cool one about dueling one-man bands it also has one featuring both the ugliest and scariest looking baby ever. Really seriously creepy baby. Also some adequate shorts for Monsters, Inc and Cars...
Worth the hour to watch, but since the best ones are ON various Pixar dvds as extras already, that is about it...

Wonder Woman
Apr. 2nd, 2009 01:51 pmGood film for the most part. Keri Russell and Nathan Fillion manage some of the chemistry they had in Waitress even just doing voices. Plus this Steve Trevor seems more competant than the original comics version. Didn't like the bimbofied Etta Candy though. Also I kept wondering where all the Amazons got their lip gloss from...
But still some funny moments and some good (if weirdly bloodless) action sequences. Pluto/Hades was especially nice and creepy...

Things I've Learned From Polls From Polls
Mar. 20th, 2009 02:17 am1) Darth Chewbacca, the Sith Strangler must face Sugar-Coated Macaque Putin
2) The preferred minor super-power would be the ability to speak both turtle AND tortoise
3) I shouldn't eat succulent babies. Which is totally unfair as they're SUCCULENT. Those are the BEST ones!
4) Popeye's financial plan is seen as the best for the nation
5) KRACKADOOOOOM!
6) The perfect gift for a loved one is to destroy their enemies
7) Results for who killed Mr. Body are inconclusive
8) Over a 1/4 of you don't want me to have a monkey butler. This makes me sad. And angry. And determined. MONKEY BUTLER YOU WILL BE MINE!
9) Its a toss up as to which would be scariest to find in your closet, bees or big spiders
10) Mork as the best roommate? Really? Williams during his coke years?

Plundering My Childhood
Feb. 3rd, 2009 09:31 pmSince movie studios are big on live-action 80s cartoon you know what I'd like to see? Jem & The Holograms. Except with the focus on struggling punk girl band The Misfits (who would probably have to change their name because there already is a real band named that) trying to succeed and being seemingly blocked at every turn by the corporate managed glam/bubblegum pop band...
Tokyo Godfathers
Dec. 18th, 2008 06:41 amOn Christmas Eve, three homeless friends find an abandoned baby. So Gin (the washed up gambler and drunk), Hana (a transvestite former lounge singer) and Miyuki (a teen runaway) set out to find the baby's mother. And encounter holiday miracles, gangland shootings and personal revelations from their pasts. Its a fairly sweet anime really...
Animal Farm (1954)
Oct. 30th, 2008 11:09 amAn animated version of the George Orwell novel. Which for those who somehow missed it, is an allegory for Communism (especially the Soviet Russian version) where the animals on a farm rise up and take over, chasing away their exploitive master. Its also a surprisingly high quality animated movie, especially given its age. Though for some reason it does add a two minute "happy" ending after the Meet the New Boss, Same as the Old Boss bit. Having all the non-pigs, even ones from neighboring farms rise up AGAIN to throw down Napolean and his underlings. I don't know, maybe the movie makers figured that the "improved" ending would inspire all those poor Commies to get rid of the Party bosses? Watching smuggled versions I guess, since theres no chance ever that ANY version of Animal Farm is going to be allowed to go to the public in any 1950s Communist state...
Grave of the Fireflies
Oct. 20th, 2008 08:26 amSad movie. Seita is a young boy (teen maybe?) in WW2 Japan. After his mother is fatally injured in an air raid he takes it on himself to take care of his toddler sister Setsuko. He leaves the foster home they're in and moves them both into a more remote shelter. Then Sesuko gets sick and dies. Then he lets himself die. Which isn't much of a spoiler, since they're both shown as dead in the first five minutes with the rest of the movie being flashbacks. Like I said, sad movie...
