Lastly Marvel Zombies 5 has Aaron, Howard and Jackie journey to the cyberpunk Marvel-8410 to chase down the E.A.T.R. virus cyber-zombies. Of course when Aaron's ex becomes involved it makes things more complicated. The Geof Darrow/Christina Strain cover is also very sweet...

So thanks to my current flushitude with cash-ola I ended up grabbing the 2nd and 3rd Atomic Robo trades. One is all punching Nazi walking tanks and WW2 stuff and the other is fighting some Cthulu like beastie across the century with the help of Charles Fort and Carl Sagan. Sagan is pretty bad-ass actually...

The new Nova feels a bit like a place-holder with Old Sphinx's 'champions' (Nova, Mr. Fantastic, Darkhawk, Black Bolt & Namoria) fighting Young Sphinx's crew (Moonstone, Ulysses Bloodstone, different Darkhawk, Basilisk & Man-Wolf). Also someone learns the importance of not looking up their future when in the middle of a fight...

Atomic Robo: Vol. 1 Atomic Robo and the Fightin' Scientists of Tesladyne written by Brian Clevenger, art by Scott Wegener, colors by Ronda Pattison and letters by Jeff Powell

In 1923 Niola Tesla unveiled the world's first artificial intelligence, in the form of a Atomic Robo. In 1938 Robo goes on a top secret mission for the U.S. government in exchange for full citizenship rights (the mission involves a secret Himalayan Nazi base). After that Robo goes on to form Tesladyne, where he and his selected action scientists engage the strange and bizarre. Like giant ants in Nevada or "walking" pyramids in Egypt. Or maybe secret, once lost Nazi science bases...

Clevenger's sense of humor (familiar to those who know him from his webcomic 8-bit Theater) is what makes this book shine. Its not just watching a robot smash a giant ant with a car. Its clever and well-crafted jokes WHILE hitting a giant ant with a Buick...

Pluto vol.1 by Naoki Urasawa and Takashi Nagasaki

In an ideal world where man and robots coexist, someone or something has destroyed the powerful Swiss robot Mont Blanc. Elsewhere a key figure in the robot rights group is murdered. The two incidents appear to be unrelated...except for one very conspicuous clue - the bodies of both victims have fashioned into some sort of bizarre collage complete with makeshift horns placed by the victims' heads. INTERPOL assigns robot detective Geischt to this most strange and complex case - and he discovers that he too, as one of the Seven Great Robots of the World, is one of the targets.

Naoki Urasawa is one of the top Manga writers alive, behind critical and fan favorite works like Monster and 20th Century Boys. Which is probably why was able to convince the family of the late legendary Osamu Tezuka to re-create one of his greatest stories. "The Greatest Robot on Earth" story from Astro Boy. Urasawa and his artistic partner Nagasaki produce something greater than a simple homage. Even in this first volume can be seen the set-up and beginnings for a science fiction classic...

Do you think Canadians get depressed that they'll never get to build space robots? I bet they do. They probably all wake up around 2-3 AM at least twice a month and just cry into their pillows about it. That would be why all Canadian pillows have to be resistant to liquid saline. Otherwise they're pillows would just rot away from the regular infusion of Never Going to BUild a Space Robot Tears. Poor, poor Canadians...

But even an artificial man can love...

Or its the story of a beautiful princess trapped by a wicked king and the brave knight who will do anything to save her...

Or maybe both...

Astro Boy by Osamu Tezuka

Astro Boy originally named Tetsuwan Atom or "Mighty Atom" is one of the cornerstones of Japanese manga and anime. Created and written by comics legend Osamu Tezuka, the series ran for EIGHTEEN years. Tezuka's stories, based around the adventures of the good-hearted robot boy became a one of the cultural touchstones of Japan. Here you have the first two volumes collected and translated into English. You get stories of alien invaders, robot/human politics, stage magic and cyborg dogs. Trips to the moon, powerful battles and a robot hero with machine guns in his butt...

These early stories are fun to read and enhanced by the cartoonish but clean drawing style. The characters have exageratted physical characteristics, emotionally overreact and use classic sight-gags. While Tezuka himself was not always happy with his early work it still has a simple elegance to it and the stories are, above all, fun...

Hrm. An interesting question. Who would be my favorite. Probably Bender. Everyone loves Bender. Still I have a great deal of fondness for both the pre- and post-Nextwave versions of Aaron Stack. Oh and K-9. Excellent sidekick there. But no, we'll stick with Bender...

ETA: But what about Red Robot? No, no. Still Bender...

Such a great movie. Robots in love. Fat people in floaty chairs. Friendly pet cock-roaches. Actually whats up with Pixar and lovable vermin?

Wow. So its been over a month since I did one of these. Basically because I had no decent ideas. But rereading The Thief of Time I came to the conclusion this Marvel Tangent 'verse needed some time travel themed stuff.

Dr. Alison Blaire is/was/will be a 23rd Century theoretical physicist. Her wife Dr. Betsy Braddock is/was/will be cyberneticist and mechanical engineer. Together the two built the Tachyon Slipdrive, capable of propelling a small craft backwards and forwards in time. Unfortunately for them someone else would/was/is already using a variant time travel technology, robot religious fanatics called The Stark. These zealots attacked the pair in the name of their mysterious Lord K, forcing the two to flee in their experimental craft. The two managed to find that The Stark were active throughout the time stream, exploiting their temporal advantage to further their lord's plan...

Alison and Betsy decided it was up to them to work against the menace of The Stark. Naming their craft The Runaway the pair began their campaign against the deadly robots. While thwarting The Stark's plans they also managed to recruit others to their cause. The blind 14th century "warlock" psychometric reader James Rhodes. The early 20th century Mystery Man Harold "Wasp" Hogan. And the 22nd century military cyborg Bethany Cabe, one of the UNGDF (United Nations Global Defense Forces) Crimson Dynamo Commandos...
