The fx were pretty great (even going to a non 3D showing).  Cumberbatch was pretty good, he does jerk genius who is still kind of likeable well as always.  Mikkelson was about average for a Marvel villain, which is an admittadly low bar.  Rest of the cast was good.  I'd say a B- for a MCU movie and a C+ as just a movie.  I did like the solution for defeating Dormammamuamamamamu.

The bits where they went around doing magic tricks and kung-fu magic were pretty fun.  And I liked Harrelson playing his actual evil twin as one of the bad guys.  And Harry Potter was generally pretty gleefully over-the-top wicked.  But the actual story bits felt like total nonesense (especially whenever they tried to make a big deal of THE EYE).  And Caine was kind of just phoning in previous roles.  And while I liked the kung-fu magic sequences, I felt the ones in the original were lit and filmed in a way I could actually WATCH them.  Still an enjoyable bit of escapism...

On the positive side I got to see the trailer for Catching Fire. Ok, the movie wasn't that bad. But it was a far sight from good. The romantic sub-plots were tacked on with no actual story support for them. The clue for the big dramatic reveal was brought up by damn near everyone constantly thru the movie with only the flimsiest of reasons. And the long-con and magic tricks were insanely over-complicated and luck dependent. Even with the last act reveal of who the 5th Horseman was. Actually the reveal of that was pretty well done as I'd guessed at it being a daughter not a son...

I can say is that during the Las Vegas trick the presence of Michael Caine and a teleportation trick made me think of watching my copy of the Prestige...

The Books of Magic written by Neil Gaiman, art by John Bolton, Scott Hampton, Charles Vess & Paul Johnson, letters by Todd Klein

Timothy Hunter thinks of himself as a normal, everyday twelve year old kid. Of course he doesn't know he is someone on whom fate and destiny and stuff can hinge. Which is why a quartet of odd trenchcoated "men" decide to offer him an opportunity. The chance to learn about magic. The Phantom Stranger to show him the history of magic. John Constantine to give him a tour of the DCU's mystical side. Dr. Occult to lead him around the worlds of maybe and could be. And Mr. E to take him by the hand and into the potential of what may come next...

I've always liked Tim. From his introduction here when he's more of a prop to hold up the story to the long ongoing to the various minis that followed that. Hell, I'd say Tim would work better to try and integrate into the mainstream DCU, but what do I know...

Which teen-ager or teacher would I molest? Seriously?

ETA: Looks like someone realized a groping Harry Potter character question was bad and changed it. So type of spell? Abjuration is a type of spell. And its got most of the boom spells. Or Conjuration. Plenty of boom there. Really I'd pick a type that let me destroy things for annoying me...

Went down to Samurai Comics for their first of the year clearance sale. 25-75% off everything, so got some decent deals. Grabbed the 2nd Animal Man tpb that finishes up the Grant Morrison run, the two Transmet trades I was missing and the last Starman trade (since I knew I didn't have that one)...

Also picked up the expansion set for Ninja Burger on the serious cheap and some Magic singles, since I decided to start playing again. Mostly some red dragons, but also another Serra angel and a cheap Royal assassin (a rare I always wanted but never managed to get for some reason). Also a set of red/white cards called Lightning Helix, hits for 3 damage that then drains to the caster...
