I only lasted an hour today. The one game I wanted was already full. The anime room wasn't showing anything I was interested in. And looking at all the games I thought about signing up for (all boardgames) were ones either I or [profile] spoonyone owned. Which meant I would have been PAYING for the opportunity to play games I could do for free if I just put some effort into setting up a Game Night...

And looking at Saturday all that I see I kind of want to do is a 2 hour Toon game and the Midnight Hentai Dubbing event. Neither is worth the drive down to Mesa really. So I'm just going to call it done. And a waste of $35 (closer to fifty after I factor in fuel costs). I don't think I've been to a decent con in...four years? I think the Hexacon where I got to play Slaughterhouse: Indigo and Complete Mafia with Tony D was four years ago...

Still, just another reason to look forward to moving out come August. Being able to do a Game Night on Fridays before work and not have to kick people out at 10. And having my own place to try and run a Sunday night rpg...

It was Thursday, so not much happened. I sat in on a game of Railroad Tycoon. Then I went looking for food (since the Mesa Convention Centrer doesn't allow any kind of outside food/drink. If you get caught with it, apparantly the con gets fined). Anyway, since there wasn't really anything I was really wanting to do I decided to just call it a day and head home. Hopefully tomorrow will be better...

Spent the afternoon hanging with Kevin, [profile] spoonyone and [profile] kafeixuesheng Not Watching WWECW's One Night Stand ppv. Instead we played some board games (including showing [profile] kafeixuesheng why we so rarely play Zombies!). We also watched a movie called Gamers, a mockumentary of a gaming group looking to break the record for longest ongoing campaign (at 23 years). I thought much of it (including some really mean gamer stereotypes) was fucking hilarious...

Sunday Game

Still no Matt, so things are still unsure as to what game we may eventually run. Tonight was more board games. Some Formula De, Guillotine and then some Descent where Miles utterly crushed us. The team of Archer, Ranger, Valkyrie did not do very well...

So this weekend we made some tentative plans to begin playing again. Mostly Brendan reworked his streetfighter for the Thieves' World game while the rest of us played Cleopatra. And then we rolled up some MSH characters, since [profile] spoonyone thinks he may run a table-top heroes game as well as the PbP one. I rolled a transforming robot, ROCKET RHINO! Or I can always bring back Gorilla X. Or my mystic lawyer, Firebird...

Spent the evening playing Scrabble and Chez Geek, discussing (ie ranting) about DC and Marvel comics and exchanging gits with some friends. From 3 friends I got 3 movies. Only 1 of which duplicates one I've already got the dvd for. Not a bad ratio...

Me gots: Young Frankenstein, Payback and O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Noah gots: Cerebus volume 1 and King of Comedy dvd
Miles gots: Bone Complete Edition and DMZ vol 1
Brendan gots: T-shirts from threadless and Turtledove's "Lost Legion" series, Young Frankenstein and The Big Red One

It was an enjoyable night, despite Miles crushing everyone at Scrabble after jumping way in the lead with the 86 point "rebounders"...

I just spent thirty dollars so I can adventure in the land of books, kicking monster ass with my mad spelling skills. I regret nothing!

And now a gift idea for those friends who DO enjoy lengthy, in depth, complicated board games.

The game starts out with everyone working together to explore a haunted house. And then at some point the Haunt is revealed and one of the players turns traitor. A very fun game, especially for those who like horror boards games like Arkham Horror. Though make sure to download the errata pages to send with...

$31 from Game Outfitter or $30 from Boardgames.com

Why of all the board and card games buy people this one? Because they'll play it. Its simple and fun and you can actually convince a whole family to try this out. I love games like Ra and Betrayal at the House on the Hill but I wouldn't try and get my mom to play. I broke out this one at the last big holiday gathering and ended up with 8 people playing, ages 28 to 60. That says good party game and thus great gift...

Sunday Game

No Thieves' World this week because of a death in my GMs family. Instead I hung out for the afternoon and evening with Brendan and Kevin. Drove out to Imperial Outpost so Brendan could pick up some more Warhammer stuff. Poor dumb bastard decided to go with Skaven when he got into the game. And now the painting of his vast hordes is driving him mad. Mad I tells you!

Then we played some Ra which I managed to win after just dominating in the final round. We also watched Reefer Madness: the Musical since Kevin had only seen the original...

And it was another lighter than expected week. Though apparantly I'm not the only one to mention that my comic shop's website is widely inaccurate when it comes to what is supposed to arrive each week. So only two pulls this week...

First is the next issue of Squadron Supreme. This one focuses mostly on Blur, Dr. Burbank and Nighthawk. And I definately think the writing is starting to pick up again, getting back to previous levels. And the art seems crisper as well...

Then we've got a new Fables, where the Adversary meets with his top people to make plans against Fabletown. I especially liked Hansel as his High Inquisitor in charge of Unauthorized Sorcery. There's also a short back-up story by Gene Ha about Rapunzel...

So since I had some extra money in my budget I decided to go down to Game Depot. Where unlike Gamer's Inn I had to make hard decisions about what I could and couldn't buy. I ended up grabbing the new edition of RuneQuest from Mongoose (which is frankly a little thin at 128 pages for 25 bucks) and a copy of Lost Cities. Next time I'll probably grab the Thieves' World source book (though I'm annoyed its $35) and a copy of Ra...

Not going out to Friday Board Game Night. Mostly because I needed sleep. But also because Noah's starting up that Thieves' World campaign on Sunday. And I just don't want to drive out to Gamer's Inn more than once a week-end. So I'll miss regularly losing at most games (no really I will), my S'danzo Merc is pretty freaking cool and I'm looking forward to playing him. Even in a d20 based campaign setting...

Still Green Ronin (I think thats who does the new TW stuff) has added some interesting twists to the system. Dropped alignment, added a reputation stat and a few other things...

So I decided to head to Gamer's Inn last night where [livejournal.com profile] spoonyone and the others had migrated after Game Den closed. Place was much improved from the last time I went. Less funk and they had partitioned off the computers and given them all head sets so it was much quieter. Given my exhausted state I did ok. Didn't win at anything, but only really got crushed at Diablo and Guillotine. Almost managed to win Rheinlander despite having no idea what I was doing. Also played some Ra...

Damn you Central American-ish ceramic like frog! Why must you give me the colored spheres in the incorrect sequence!

Game Day

Dec. 17th, 2005 08:08 pm

Last one for a couple weeks. Though it looks likely that we'll be switching to either Thursday or Friday afternoons. Depending on what Miles' class schedule is next semester...

So today we played some Descent. Nice board game, a dungeon quest kind of thing. We got fairly lucky on our initial skill cards and that allowed us to steadily power up. Heck, Mike took down the final Demon Lord with a single shot. Long game though. Somewhere in between 2 and 3 hours...

Also played some Guillotine and St. Petersburg. And I managed to beat Mike's Deadly Commons Red/Green M:tG deck. First with my Black speed deck, then my Green speed deck...
lurkerwithout: (Mal's pretty hat Angie creator)
Another day playing board/card games. This week played some Bohnanaza (and picked up an expansion set for), then some Fred's Zoo (or is Frank's Zoo? I forget.) Then lets see...I think it was St. Petersburg, where I got kind of hosed by not understanding the final scoring rules. No wait, I think we played M before that. M is cool. Finished up with a couple games of Prince's of Florence. Which is a bidding/board game where you build an artists colony. Much cooler than it sounds. And easier than it looks...
lurkerwithout: (Mal's pretty hat Angie creator)
So we finally got back the group game running again, sort of. Mostly the day was going to be spent just playing board games. Except Miles couldn't make it. And Brendan got called in by work. And then I found out I'd been scheduled to work. And Noah was late. Still managed to get in a game of Munchkin with Brendan and some other people at the game store...

First off, managed to spend a couple hours over at Dan/Jane's playing a little HackMaster. Mostly I stopped by to see how Jane is recovering from surgery...

Later on, I did board games with Brendan and Spoony and Miles. Broke out some Scrabble, as well as Catan, Rubis (a tough stacking puzzle game)and a couple games of Apples to Apples...
