Brief Thoughts on TLOEG: The Black Dossier

Ok, lets expand on that. Much of the book is in text form. Often odd dialect text form. Which means not enough Kevin O'Neal art. And in addition too much of the book is dedicated to characters I only have the most minimal interset in. Fanny Hill and Orlando in particular. If I wanted Orlando's life story, theres a movie version I remember a former roommate owned. Clever choices in some of the fictional characters (James Bond, Harry Lime, Emma Peel) are offset by using some truly obscure ones for others (The Golliwog? The Doll Twins?) And some ideas probably were better in concept than execution (Post WWII England being under the control 1984's Big Brother). Also, Alan Moore, you like sex. WE GET IT. Please try to focus on it slightly less in the future. Then lastly you have the escape from the Leagues' World of All Fictions to the REAL World of All Fictions (the Blazing World). Ugh...
Heres to hoping the next volume is better. Though it won't be one I buy unseen...

Name recomendations
Nov. 18th, 2007 04:40 amOne of the secondary ideas I've been plugging away at for my SuperFic setting is a team of late teens heroes. So far I've been tagging them either Teen Team or Young Heroes. I don't really like either the name. No real reason for the latter, but the first is because its already been used by at least one other super-hero parody writer I know. I've thought about going with Junior League, but thats a name I've already set aside for a team of actual kid (average age like 9 or 10) supers in my MSH rpg setting. So any ideas for a name? Serious and non-serious are fine. And that the major two teams I've got right now are The Team and a Justice League parody called the Super Legion of Justice Friends or SLJF...
Edit: Oh wait, I almost forget the Power Rangers parody group Magi Prinsessa Soldat Force...

So I'm going to check my writing notebook to see what there might be thats worth polishing up to post. And also I'll redo the Inspiration Meme. The rules are simple. Reply to this post and I'll pick one (or more) of your interests and do something creative based on it. For me, that will most likely involve some kind of short fiction. But it can be anything. Kid Weasel, SwimKid, Kid Quark, Kid Demonologist, Kid Dracula, Kid Bones, Disaster-Action-Kid. Not to mention assorted Girls, Grrls, Lads, Lasses and Maids. Actually looking I don't think I have any Lasses right now. There are TWO Grrls. Goth Grrl and Ninja Grrl, who aren't even vaguely associated with each other...

Way, way back in the nineties, during my college years, I had planned doing a fiction called Darkside Dizney. Stories inspired by the Disney afternoon cartoons DuckTales, TaleSpin and Darkwing Duck. I had only finished one before getting distracted and drawn into the super-hero fiction mailing list Superguy.
That story, “Dark Rebirth”, was what I had originally planned on rewriting as my final piece for the inspiration meme. It involved the death of Darkwing Duck, killed by his nemesis Nega-duck. Who would in turn be killed by Darkwing's adopted daughter Goslyn in her role as Quiverwing Quack. But I decided instead to do this essay, explaining why I wasn't going to do the rewrite. We'll get to why in just a moment.
The original story was meant as the prelude for my Darkside Dizney 'verse. One set several years in the future from the Disney cartoons. Twenty-something Goslyn would be a grim avenger-of-the-night type, Honker would have become the new GizmoDuck and Launchpad would have been captured by F.O.W.L and brainwashed into becoming the Black Canard, leader of the reborn Sky-Pirates.
And I had plans for updating the rest of the cast of characters from DuckTales, Darkwing Duck and TaleSpin (which I had decided took place four or five decades before the other shows). Uncle Scrooge would have passed on, his company being run by Donald. The nephews and Webby would be Duck'Tagnan and the Three Mousekateers (yes ducks dressed as mice dressed as musketeers). A grandson of Sher Khan running Khan Enterprises. And so on.
But part of what I wanted to do originally with the series was make a more mature and “adult” revamp. A grimmer, and thus cooler, version of three of my favorite kids shows. And nowadays I'm simply fed up with dark, hard-core stories and grim and extreme revamps of characters. When comic shelves are flooded with stories where cloned thunder gods murder black super-heroes or where ex-wives kill the family of their friends in the stupidest reconciliation attempt ever, I don't have any desire to add anything to that. I don't even enjoy thinking that the mess DC and Marvel have made of their universes is something I once would have enjoyed. Which might explain why they sell so well. There are still plenty of comics fans who want to see Nega-duck die slowly after taking a broad-head arrow to the lung. I'm just not one of them anymore.
