From [profile] bradhicks' review of 300.

"It's a remake of Ralph Bakshi's Wizards with the Batman as the starring character."

Still not sure whether I want to see this movie. Advanced reviews are mixed so far, to say the least...

A recent editorial by Karen Healey over at Girls Read Comics made me decide to put down an idea I've been noodling over. Her editorial is on one of the final Civil War pages where Tony Stark orders the newly demoted Maria Hill to fetch him coffee. And that got me rethinking my idea on women in leadership roles in comics. Mostly of the comics of the Big Two. And how at a casual glance Marvel seems to be better at this...

Not counting teams where every member is female, lets see of the "name" hero teams who has had more women as the leader. For Marvel, I'd say the big teams would be: the Avengers, the various X-Teams, the Fantastic Four, the Defenders, Alpha Flight and possibly the New Warriors and Thunderbolts. With DC you would have: the JLA, the LSH, the JSA/All-star Squadron/Infinity Inc, the Teen Titans/Young Justice, the Outsiders, Doom Patrol and now Birds of Prey (which is discounted, being an all-female group).

For the Avengers I can think of at least two female chairwomen, Wasp and Captain Marvel (who also ran the Nextwave team). And possibly a third in Black Widow (though I'm not certain on that one). With the Four, for one fairly lengthy run while Reed and Doom were thought to be dead, Sue has led the team. The X-Men of course have Storm. And Psylocke was team leader during the Australian era, before she was ninjafied. I believe Mirage (was that the valkyrie/Native American one?) was leader for the New Mutants. And while Havok seemed to be the leader of X-Factor during the initial David run, I'd say that Val Cooper was the actual team leader. Where is Val nowadays? Or Gyrich. But back on point. I'm only slightly familiar with much of the Defenders runs, but IIRC both Valkyrie and Moondragon had leadership periods on the team. Heather Hudson was in charge of Alpha Flight for large portions of that. With the Warriors, Namorita ran the team pre-Khymera while Night Thrasher was running around on his own title. And I think Moonstone or Songbird led the Thunderbolts at some point...

Over at DC I can't think of a single super-heroine who has been leader of the JLA. Not even Wonder Woman or Black Canary. Hippolyta did run the JSA at times, IIRC. As did the original Liberty Belle. I'm certain that various female Legionaires have been in charge. But given my slight knowledge and the title's regular retconned relaunches, I'm hard pressed to remember who, other than Saturn Girl or Super-Girl, is likely. Jade briefly led the Outsiders up to the Infinite Crisis, when she was taken out by Kyle Rayner Girlfriend Syndrome. Donna Troi led the Titans at various times. And Celsius (I think that was her name) was the Doom Patrol leader after Steve Niles death...

Hmmm. This might be more even then I thought. And adding in "good" orginizations like Checkmate/D.E.O./Suicide Squad and S.H.I.E.L.D. things tip even more towards DC with Amanda Waller, Chase and other female leaders beating out the more limited selection of named female officers in S.H.I.E.L.D...

I'm not sure how things would shake down with the various other comics imprints. Though I think WildStorm probably would top out, with female leaders of most of their major teams (StormWatch, W.I.L.D.Cats, the Authority, Gen13)...

This needs more thought. Or possibly some actual research and not just my shoddy memory...

Off of Online Onslaught

"From the "Not Exactly Shocking" File: WWE has decided to stay the hell away from the Hammerstein Ballroom this summer, and has rescheduled the ECW One Night Stand PPV for Jacksonville, FL. On one hand, I say: Smart move, because there are vindictive fans in NYC who would pay good money just to get on PPV and shit all over what WWE has done to ECW. There's a very good, very real chance that by June, RVD will be gone, CM Punk will be buried, and the announce team will be Todd Grisham and Brad Armstrong. WWE would be CRUCIFIED by those fans.

On the other hand, I say: SISSIES~!

Who called this happening? And how many months ago did I?"

Pity. Watching the hard-core, evil bastards that make up the East coast ECW fandom burn down the building was the only reason I might have bought this PPV...

Can barely keep my head up. Feeling dizzy and light-headed. Right eye is all scratchy with occasional feeling like I've been poked. Start of a headache. Time to get ready for work...
