New Comics Day 8/3/11
Aug. 4th, 2011 06:24 pmLots of comics for this week. Partly from me deciding to grab the Waid written Daredevil soft relaunch after seeing it praised damn near everywhere. And it really is a great supers comic. Waid manages to move past all the crap and angst of the last 10, 20 years for the character and without any mystic hand-waving or retcons. Plus it helps that pencil and inkers Paolo Rivera and Joe Rivera due a pretty amazing job...
Then its more (of what is hopefully wrapping up) "Fear Itself" cross-over issues. The Thunderbolts A-team is mostly trying to get back on their feat after the possessed Juggernaut delivered ass-kicking. And I like the traitor in the group calling up Zemo for advice on dealing with an attack by Sin's Nazi rocket...
Then the Avengers Academy kids are sent away from the front line to rest up at their school only to have some of the bad guys follow them there. Which given that the evil god things mandate is to create global panic to empower their snake/fear/god/boss/thing, attacking a group of teen-agers in a secret sub-dimensional base doesn't seem to help with that...
And finally Heroes for Hire is split between Elektra and Shroud fighting piles of no-name goons controlled by the Purple Man and Paladin and Gargoyle and the fall-out from possessed Thing's attack on Brooklyn...
Leaving Marvel first up is more of Son of Dragon in Savage Dragon. Also some checking in with creepy couple Angel-2 and Mr. Glum. And a back-up feature about Vanguard...
So apparently Scalped will be closing up in nine issues with #60. Which explains all the game-clearing going on. You've got Red Crow burning, in some cases fairly literally, his criminal associations. And the severely wounded Bad Horse and Falls Down crawling out of the hospital to go after Chaser. And even the blowhard Sheriff whats his face looking to reinvent himself as an actual cop...
iZombie has, well, pretty much everyone meeting up due to the ongoing zombie rampage. Well not the vampire collective, though they were in last issue. And mummy dude and ghost girl are kind of off to the side doing something or other. But Gwen and her monster hunter boyfriend and Kid Wereterrier all end up in a giant clusterfuck with the government sponsored monster team and lots of zombies AND even more members of the monster hunter group. And its got Grampa Chimp and Spot's friends battling zombies while looking for Spot as well...
Secret Six comes to a close with this issue. And I kind of wish that Simone had gone for a real bloodbath as the Bane led Six face off against damn near every hero on the planet. I'm going to miss this fucked-up family. Though the cover where the core Six are stealing the literal title on their way out is nice...
And finally I've got the DC Comics Presents the Metal Men 100-page thing that got recalled a couple weeks back. Which is all lots of Keith Giffen written and Kevin Maguire drawn wacky robot adventures. Except for the first story which is Bob Haney and Kevin Maguire bringing the pure Silver Age crazyness...

New Comics Day 7/6/11
Jul. 6th, 2011 08:25 pmMore "Fear Itself" tie-ins still. With the Thunderbolts chasing after Norse Snake Fear God Thing-ized team-member Juggernaut. And Heroes for Hire has Paladin and Gargoyle attempting to stall a Fear-ized Ben Grimm, while Shroud and Elektra are tasked with dealing with some of the Raft escapees. Both are also using different artists. Thunderbolts has some clean, basic work from artist Declan Shalvey and colorist Frank Martin Jr. In fact I think I recognize Shalvey from some Dark Horse "Hellboy" related books. H4H on the other hand has Kyle Hotz who is just a white-hot mess of ugly character designs...
iZombie seems to be using its shambling zombie infestation as a means to bring together its various characters. Both the original group of monsters and monster hunters, as well as the supernatural secret agents of V.E.I.L. people...
And finally Secret Six seems to be starting up a major ramp up for Bane's character, with him leading the multitude of members of the "Six" into an all-out war with the Bat-Family. Just in time for the book to disapear during the Flashpoint-reboot and for most likely everything they accomplish to be rendered meaningless. Of course that could allow Simone to go for something REALLY shocking with the story since it's probably going to be erased in the fall anyway...

New Comics Day 6/1/11
Jun. 1st, 2011 07:31 pmI was really expecting comics to be delayed this week. But I guess comics don't care about veterans or something? And its a fairly large pull week as well...
Starting with a new Criminal arc, "The Last of the Innocent". Which I swear looks to be a noir version of that What if Archie Married Veronica comic...
And Avengers Academy is one of those .1 new reader friendly issues. With the kids going out and looking up what happened to the other teens recruited by Osborne. The ones who didn't make the Avengers, High Risk of Super-Villainy list...
Heroes for Hire concludes its Spider-Man guest spot with a helping hand from Santana. And a return by Misty to active work...
Thunderbolts finish up their Middle East zombie infenstation while their prison "home" gets a visit from a "Fear Itself" tie-in. Leading to yet another mass break-out...
Leaving Marvel for DC, the Secret Six return from their visit to Hell. Where they've learned to be a family. A fucked up headcase family...
iZombie reveals that ancient mummy dudes really love skeeball. Plus a look at secret agent monster agency V.E.I.L's ongoing missions. Where we get to meet the Chief of said agency...
And gangsters vs. vampires vs. aliens Turf wraps up. With a super-busy, gigantic, piles of casulties final brawl. Still too much text though out what was more an interesting book than a good one...

New Comics Day 5/4/11
May. 5th, 2011 06:23 pmSo my store finally managed to actually get in an issue of Proof: Endangered. Just as the mini-series ends. Oh well, at least they also had the first couple issues so there is that. I do have to say I like the sharper definition in the art. Less murky from the original run...
The Secret Six are still in Hell. And I'm still waiting for the big Gotcha, 'cause I just do not buy that Apokalyptians would end up in regular Hell. I mean the management has enough constant turnover without mixing in Darkseid or really any of his minions...
The Annihilators continue to deal with the fall-out from the return of the Dire Wraiths, though it looks like someone else may be manipulating the situation from the shadows. And I'm not sure how I feel about DnA retconning the original Rocket Raccoon mini-series the way they do in the back-up...
Avengers Academy Giant-Size by Paul Tobin has a team-up between non-team team the Young Allies and Academy kids as both groups are targeted by the assassin Arcade. Which leads to the latest Avengers Academy where the two groups and some of the Initiative grads throw a capes prom...
Misty and Paladin work to get the whole Heroes for Hire idea back on track, going after another shipment of the Atlantean drug Hook. And getting some help from a friendly neighborhood wallcrawler...
The latest iZombie acts as a great new jumping on point. Managing to drop the 4-1-1 on the various characters and plot lines in an enjoyable way...
And finally the second issue of Mouse Guard: The Black Axe. With sea journeys and sea monsters and drunken sea captains. Arrr!

New Comics Day 4/6/11
Apr. 7th, 2011 07:45 pmA very heavy pull-list this week, starting with a new Dungeons & Dragons. Where the head bad guy makes a classic mistake of interrogating a prisoner. Come on dude, kill first then interrogate. Thats what speak with dead spells are for...
And more fantasy goodness in Orc Stain with Bowie and Zazu continuing to wreak havoc in the prison camp, while One-Eye works at finding a way to escape from the belly of the beast...
The Weird World of Jack Staff makes a return with a tale of destiny and time-travel and magic swords...
In the second issue of the latest Firebreather Duncan just tries to take a girl to prom without any family craziness interfering. One guess how well that works out...
THe Secret Six are still in Hell, searching out..well various significant people for several of them. Though I think the appearances of several fallen members is a big fake-out. No way any other devils are would still be in charge if fallen Apokolyptians went to Hell...
Mike Allred takes a break from the art duties on iZombie, but happily they get Gilbert Hernandez of Love & Rockets to fill in on this prequel story featuring Ellie the Ghost and the Ghost community at the cemetery...
Heroes For Hire finishes up its first story arc, also still with a fill in artist. Sadly penciler Robert Atkins is not at the same level as original artist Brad Walker. A real detraction in an issue that has both a Misty vs. the Punisher fight and a Iron Fist vs. Paladin, Falcon, Black Widow and Moon Knight brawl...
And we finish with some more disappointing art. With DnA's Annihilators poorly served by Tan Eng Huat. He just doesn't manage to pull off the giant epicness of the Annihilators facing off against a horde of Dire Wraith monsters in skies of Galador under the baleful light of the Black Sun. However, Timothy Green II, the artist on the Rocket Raccoon & Groot back-up more than brings the a-game to a story with anthropomorphic animals and plants and robot clowns and lasers...

New Comics Day 3/2/11r
Mar. 2nd, 2011 08:15 pmA fairly heavy haul to start off a new month with over a half-dozen titles from my pull coming in. Starting with a Man-Thing centered issue of Thunderbolts with a guest appearance by sorceress Jennifer Kale who is looking to spring her old friend from the super-slammer...
Then we've got the first issue of Annihilators where the proto-team meets with a potential new member in the Space Knight Ikon. Whose timing is good since an old threat re-emerges. Also included is a "Rocket Raccoon & Groot" back-up, wonderfully drawn by Timothy Green II...
More Abnett and Lanning on Heroes for Hire with this issue concentrating on the captive Misty Knight and the VR-dreamscape the Puppetmaster is keeping her in...
And then some Avengers Academy with a brief look at some of the kids' super-hero classes, followed by a trip to Stamford...
Still Marvel, but their Icon imprint with the next Incognito: Bad Influences. Where Zak continues to try and infiltrate his old life but keeps having problems because of the whole no-longer-a-sociopath thing. Like not being able to enjoy a simple pit fight involving drugged out and cybered-up toddlers...
The Secret Six actually start a story arc thats not connected to another series. With a visit back to a certain mystic card from the first arc of the current volume...
And then a Darkwing Duck annual. First a Quackerjack tale of dolls, MMORPGs and redemption. And then a brief tale of time travel and turtles...
Finally a new issue of the Tick, with the titular hero opening a pet-sitting service for super-heroes. Which includes a pet dinosaur named Scary Chicken. And a super-caprybara named Cap'n Bara. I love Benito Cereno's gift for names...

New Comics Day 2/2/11
Feb. 2nd, 2011 10:43 pmI wonder why Midtown always has Knights of the Dinner Table listed as arriving a week early. I can't think of any other titles that always seem to consistently ship at different points in the month. Anyway, this issue mostly concentrates on the return of Gary Jackson and the reaction of the various Knights (including Johnny K who is sitting in) to the news. Also you have a change-up in the NPC-themed articles. With Casting Call going with a Star Wars character and GBU using Call of Cthulu and some 1920s Negro League concepts...
This month's Secret Six is another cross-over issue. This time being the first half, with the second being continued in Doom Patrol. Who apparantly have Ambush Bug as a member now...
The Viltrumite War looks to being drawing to a conclusion in Invincible, with Invincible, Omni-Man and TechJacket racing back to Earth, where they believe the remaining Viltrumites have gone...
And lastly iZombie you've got Gwen visiting college, Ellie trying out her new possession talent, Galatea gathering bodies and the vampire girl's taking steps to deal with the vampire hunter duo...

New Comics Day 1/12/11
Jan. 13th, 2011 06:36 pmSo this a day late. I had important things to do. Involving..er..sleep. And games ending in 'ville. Anyway we'll start with the new Heroes for Hire. Where Abnett and Lanning make me like Paladin. The purple clad mercenary. Man, that hasn't happened since I was twelve and he teamed up with the Wasp to fight the Grey Gargoyle in some random Avengers issue...
The latest Secret Six is the second half of a story started in Action Comics. Which is the Lex Luthor Adventures book. But Simone does some nice expositioning with Ragdoll so that I can basically follow things. Which is basically a confrontation between Luthor and Vandal Savage where baldy has hired the Six (though there are seven of them present). Also Luthor has a killer girl 'bot he's named Lois. Thats just creepy...
Unwritten has Tommy stuck in the narrative of Moby Dick trying to communicate with what he thinks is his father. And Rich and Lizzie are captured in the "real" world by the mysterious puppet lady...
Savage Dragon wraps up its "Emperor Dragon" arc with a partial reboot. One that leaves me wondering who will be the new titular character...

New Comics Day 11/3/10
Nov. 3rd, 2010 11:30 pmAnother heavy pull this week. Helped along by the start of the second Incognito mini-series by Brubaker & Phillips. Which I somehow managed to miss when it came out sometime in the last couple weeks. Which has Zack Overkill going from super-villain to office drone in Witness Protection to government agent...
Sadly Young Allies comes to an end with its 6th issue. Which concentrates on Firestar and guest start Emma Frost. Who, back when she was a bad guy, had recruited the teen-age Angelica to try and train her into being her personal assassin. Oh well, one less book from the Big Two cape lines to keep up with...
But the other young supers book from Marvel, Avengers Academy looks to doing well. This time around the focus moves to Reptil, who has just been made class leader. Not that he isn't just as mentally screwed up as the others...
And lastly from the House of Ideas for the week is the next Strange Tales II. A great cover here by Jaime Hernadez, which ties into the Space Phantom story he has in the issue. His brother Gilbert has an amusing Iron Man/Toro team-up short also. Jeffrey Brown's X-Men story is also a stand out. Though Paul Maybury's Spider-Man story with Peter Parker telling various people various lies to explain his super-hero injuries, which leads to Aunt May thinking Mary Jane is beating him, might be my favorite...
The new ps238 concentrates mostly on Zodon and Victor VonFogg's cross-dimensional caper. Though we do get to check in with Ron/Argonaut and Tyler/Moon Shadow in space a few times...
Invincible hits its 75th issue with the climax of the Viltumite War. With the Coalition Viltrumite's and their most powerful allies going after the remaining Viltrumite Empire leaders. Also some nice Science Dog and TechJacket back-ups...
G0dland briefly becomes D0gland with a look at Maxim's people. And lots of..er..look its all very crazy and Kirby-tastic and I'm really going to need to give this one another read or two to follow everything thats happening here...
The cover for Secret Six has Bane wearing crude armor, wielding a bone lance and riding a T-Rex/Allosaurus type dino. Do you need anything else to sell you on this?
And we finish up with the latest iZombie. Gwendolyn (zombie) does some grave digging, Horatio goes hunting (monster hunter), Scott (were-terrier) gets a date, Galatea(?) makes her debut and Ellie (ghost) bonds with a new friend...

New Comics Day 10/6/10
Oct. 7th, 2010 04:30 amIts Secret Six Classic vs. Secret Six new flavor. In Skatarsis, the Hollow Earth. Also Gail Simone decides to try and make me like Amanda Waller again by re-introducing Katrina Armstrong aka Spy Smasher aka Every Crazy Stereotype About An American Espionage Agent x2 Lady...
iZombie tells the secret, untold origin of THE WERE-TERRIER! Also rectifies its shocking lack of chimp-based characters...
Dashell and his father come to a kind of start of an understanding in Scalped. While Gina Redcrow and Dino Poor Bear discuss parenting...
Grabbed Fantastic Four in...Ataque Del M.O.D.O.K.! on a whim. Because it has a: monkeys and b: M.O.D.O.K. and I am an easy mark for both. Its the latest from writer Tom Beland essentially about members of the FF in Puerto Rico. In addition to M.O.D.O.K. and his A.I.Monkeys this issue also introduces the PR hero, El Vejigante and some wonderfully sweet moments between Reed and Sue Richards. Moments that really make me believe that the two characters could be together and not just are...
Avengers Academy focuses on Striker this time around. Striker it seems is unique from his fellow Academy members in that didn't so much screw with him as give him anything he could want. And whose mom's back-story really show-cases how much even a supposedly easy-access book like this is still aimed at 30-something or older comics fans like me. I mean a stealth Gary Hart reference? Would anyone in their 20s or younger even get that?
The Young Allies wrap their first story-arc with a big fight against the Bastards and their revealed leader, Superior the pint-size version of it looks like the Leader...
And finally a new Orc Stain. One-Eye gets tossed into some kind of prison/arena/testing beast alongside all the other captured one-eyed orcs. And swamp nymph Bowie and her companion Zazu decide to payback the nearest forces of the Orctzar for wrecking her home when they captured One-Eye...
