New Comics Day 9/25 & 10/2/13
Oct. 3rd, 2013 07:16 pmOnly one book this week, balancing out the nine from last week. That one to start the month is a Le Bruiser focused Invincible Universe. Le Bruiser being the GotG's super-powered pug dog...
Starting off last week's pulls is the new D&Dish Rat Queens. Which is basically one of those semi-humor What Happens When You Play D&D drunk things, just with an all female group. Reminds me a bit of Skullkickers, except I actually find this one funny...
"Jane" over on Fatale continues to inspire and destroy the band that has taken her in. And serial killer Wulf starts to study up on the secret world...
Two things sum up what makes Saga so wonderful this time around. Someone pukes on the baby. And Lying Cat +Slave Girl Sophie...
Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard has a dragon hunt and mole friendship and the danger of too awesome hats. Plus the cover is as amazing as always (it involves musicians and ghosts)...
The Dark Man is fucking stupid and boring and I refuse to say anything else about the Unwritten until this fucking cross-over ends...
The major event of this Young Avengers is less the cliffhanger at the end then three conversations with Mother at the beginning...
Any pull list that includes some new Empowered is a good week. And the most recent one-shot, EMpowered: Nine Beers with Ninjette is pretty fucking fantastic. Because its a Ninjette focused story. Plus Warren's latest art partner, Takeshi Miyazawa, is both one of the best he's worked with and a perfect fit for a ninja story...
King Conan continues on his quest to retake his kingdom. Along the way he bloodily destroys some dudes, rescues a noble damsel and finds some allies in a religious cult...
For some reason Dark Horse Presents decided to bring back the "Blood" by Neal Adams. Its totally incomprehensible and also crazy ugly. Maybe its the colorist Adams is working with. On the other hand, while I'm not sure how interested I am in vampire overrun Earth of the Strain I am very interested in seeing more ex-luchador El Angel de Plata and his decision to strap silver crosses to his fists...

New Comics Day 6/12 & 6/19 & 6/26
Jun. 28th, 2013 06:43 pmQuick thoughts on comics from the 12th is easy enough, there weren't any. No one put out any single issues that week I was willing to spend money on. Oh well...
After that we'll start with some Invincible and the return of Angstrom Levy. And his attack on Eve, who can't use her powers for fear of hurting her baby. Creepy...
Wonder Woman is all big brawling. With Lennox and Diana piling on their eldest sibling alongside Orion. All happily drawn by Cliff Chiang again. Plus the Millwall Fight Song. American sports teams should have club songs...
I am not a fan of extended dream quest storylines. Especially if they don't actually change anything. We'll see if the current arc for Conan the Barbarian avoids that pit...
The 25th issue of Dark Horse Presents has got some Buffy the Vampire Slayer and a Matt Fraction time travel short story and Andrew Vachss scifi in comic form and new Trekker and Nexus and some other stuff. Good stuff but I could wish for some more Finder, Resident Alien or Concrete...
This current week was a huge haul of double digit comics. Starting with the Massive making a call on the flooded and abandoned NYC...
Then Tim Truman gives Conan and Zenobia a Meet Cute in King Conan. Plus Conan punching a dude so hard his skull collapses...
Prophet is still very much Prophet with the far future scifi weirdness where even Troll can be cool and interesting...
Fatale is back to the modern story. Though thats only long enough to set up for 90s flashback and a serial killer and Jo and a has been rock star/bank robber...
The latest Knights of the Dinner Table concentrates on the Knight's regular game and Crutch's Crime Nation game. Both of which remind that Brian is both a player I wouldn't want to game with and also often a shitty friend...
The oversized 50th issue of the Unwritten is part of a cross-over with Fables. Which lets me know I jumped off that book just in time...
More happily is a new Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard anthology. With a story by Stan "Usagi Yojimbo" Sakai in the first issue...
Young Avengers starts off its next arc with former YA-er Speed and former X-kid Prodigy punching the clock at a crummy entry level job together...
And Daredevil has his final confrontation with mastermind-class Bullseye. I mean final until someone decides to use Bullseye and works out how to fix him from his current fucked up condition confrontation...
And we finish with Adventure Time, where Finn & Jake & Ice King finish off Ice King's dungeon and move on to one built by Marceline's dad...

New Comics Day 2/13/13
Feb. 14th, 2013 04:36 pmGot the final issue for Mouse Guard: the Black Axe. With Celanawe being tasked to find a new wielder for the Black Axe. Which leads to his finalizing a choice about his own life...
Saucer Country is almost at an end, with less then a day before the election starts. Leading to the Blue Birds offering to give Alvarado all their data on extraterrestrials and related research fields. Plus the scoop on ALvarado's V.P candidate's abduction experience...
Fatale steps away from Jo and her life and history. To look in on Mathilda, a Fatale in 13th Century France...

New Comics Day 8/8/12
Aug. 12th, 2012 06:23 pmMouse Guard: the Black Axe returns with its 5th issue, opening with the explanation behind Em's death and then having a return boat trip to the Mouse lands...
Marceline and the Scream Queens has the band touring with Princess Bubblegum as their band manager. And I get to see what Guy the Keyboardist is since he couldn't be human. And a back up story by Faith Erin Hicks...
The Massive manages to escape from the pirates and heads to one of the few safe ports they know of...
I'm much pleased to see Becky Cloonan back on art for Conan the Barbarian, as Conan and Belit visit his homeland to deal with a matter of honor...
And finally a Daredevil annual written and penciled by Alan Davis with appearances by members of Davis' Clan Destine characters...

New Comics Day 4/11/12
Apr. 11th, 2012 09:18 pmAnother very heavy week. And even though the store got shorted on the latest issue of the Wood/Cloonan Conan, they did get in the issue of Mouse Guard: the Black Axe I missed from a few weeks back. With the new weilder of the Black Axe having to go into the briar patch to face a killer fox...
I also got another unexpected issue of Lobster Johnson: the Burning Hand. I swear I manage to miss seeing this when checking the week's releases every time. Anyway, L.J. and his crew continue to face off against the mob's hired supernatural assassin...
The latest Resurection Man has Mitch Shelley encountering a pair of extra-normal investigators. One of whom may end up having the clues he needs to piece together his past...
The Shade concludes his adventure in Spain with demons vanquished, evil thwarted and fashion rescued...
I'm still on the fence about Paul Cornell's Saucer Country, but the various oddities and characters now look to be working into a more coherent story at least...
The Unwritten begins its new arc with a visit to somewhere and a team-up between the Tinker and Pauly the Bunny. Pauly is still a selfish asshole by the way...
Glory takes a look at future, but really it was the preview for the new Youngblood at end that draws my attention. Mostly just in showcasing how truly vast the difference in skill levels are between Ross Campbell and Rob Liefeld. Seriously, dude still can't draw feet or waists or arrows. Why would you make a super-team whose leader is an archer if you can't draw a fucking arrow?
Ungh. Right, back to good comics with the second issue of Saga. With lots of weird, alien bounty hunters and robots deadly plants and ghosts and a baby...
Over on Adventure Time with Finn & Jake are titular heroes refuse to give up in their quest to save the world from the Liche King and his super-magic bag of holding. Teaming up with Desert Princess and Princess Bubblegum and Lumpy Space Princess and Marceline and even the Ice King...
And finally a new Courtney Crumrin ongoing from Oni. And it starts with Courtney seemingly making an actual friend. Though that may be speaking too soon. Seriously, new Courtney Crumrin, in color even...

New Comics Day 11/30/11
Dec. 1st, 2011 05:27 pmAnd we end the month with a relatively light pull. Though its one that has a new Mouse Guard: the Black Axe. With a clan of ferrets. Who look weird with chest armor with those long bodies...
Then more of Thunderbolts lost in time. With the rogue group having to try and stop Hyde and Satanna from acting as Jack the Ripper. Though their Victorian disguises aren't as cool as their WW2 ones...
After that some more super-pretty Daredevil. Plus Waid still is keeping the book fun and exciting while keeping the angst levels way down...
And lastly Savage Dragon has Malcolm starting high school AND getting into it with his Dad's old foe, Overlord...

New Comics Day 5/4/11
May. 5th, 2011 06:23 pmSo my store finally managed to actually get in an issue of Proof: Endangered. Just as the mini-series ends. Oh well, at least they also had the first couple issues so there is that. I do have to say I like the sharper definition in the art. Less murky from the original run...
The Secret Six are still in Hell. And I'm still waiting for the big Gotcha, 'cause I just do not buy that Apokalyptians would end up in regular Hell. I mean the management has enough constant turnover without mixing in Darkseid or really any of his minions...
The Annihilators continue to deal with the fall-out from the return of the Dire Wraiths, though it looks like someone else may be manipulating the situation from the shadows. And I'm not sure how I feel about DnA retconning the original Rocket Raccoon mini-series the way they do in the back-up...
Avengers Academy Giant-Size by Paul Tobin has a team-up between non-team team the Young Allies and Academy kids as both groups are targeted by the assassin Arcade. Which leads to the latest Avengers Academy where the two groups and some of the Initiative grads throw a capes prom...
Misty and Paladin work to get the whole Heroes for Hire idea back on track, going after another shipment of the Atlantean drug Hook. And getting some help from a friendly neighborhood wallcrawler...
The latest iZombie acts as a great new jumping on point. Managing to drop the 4-1-1 on the various characters and plot lines in an enjoyable way...
And finally the second issue of Mouse Guard: The Black Axe. With sea journeys and sea monsters and drunken sea captains. Arrr!

New Comics Day 12/29/10
Dec. 29th, 2010 11:09 pmA very light week to end out the year, with only two pulls. Though I also got a couple comics that I missed on earlier weeks. Like the first issue of a new Firebreather mini-series. With Duncan trying to cope with both his father's death and keeping it a secret. And the always "fun" experience that is high school...
Also from previous weeks is Mouse Guard: the Black Axe. A prequel to the Fall and Winter books, telling the origin of Celanawe becoming the Black Axe...
The first of this week's two books is Jack of Fables. Issue 49 is basically a re-gathering of the various characters featured in the book. All centered around the draconic Jack. I'm not sure if I'll keep reading past the upcoming oversized 50th issue or if I'll use the milestone issue as a good place to drap it like I did for its originator series...
And also from this week is a new Scalped. Focusing on FBI agent Baylis Earl Nitz and where his obsession with Red Crow has led him...

Mouse Guard: Winter 1152 by David Petersen
What, you need more information? Its Mouse Guard. Two of them fight an owl. An owl!
Petersen's comic of mouse towns and the brave guardmice that defend them shouldn't need any more hype from me. This second book directly follows the events of Fall 1152 collection. Seriously, go and get them you will not be disappointed...

Mouse Guard: Fall 1152
Written and drawn by David Petersen
The Mouse Guard. Border patrol, pathfinders and watchers over the wild roads between the hidden Mouse cities. But Guards Lieam, Kenzie and Saxon discover a plot against the leadership of the Guard. Can they unravel the conspiracy before its too late? Or will the Guard fall from within?
Fans of books like Redwall or Watership Down would be the first target for people to recommend this for. But after that, I'd say anyone who enjoys a damn good story and beautiful, detailed art. Action wise the fight sequences against the serpent or the horde of crabs stand out. The book is simple and elegant and a fun all-ages book. And by all-ages I mean it will appeals to ALL ages...
