There Will Be Blood

Even if you ignore the acting of Day Lewis and Paul Dano as Eli (who are both stellar). And discounting this adapted Upton story of oil-drilling in early 20th century California (which is powerful). Or Johnny Greenwood's score which overlays much of the dialogue light sequences (which is perfect in adding to the impact and not overwhelming the moment). Even if you set ALL of that aside, this movie is worth watching for Robert Elswit's cinematography, which is just pure fucking brilliance...

Date: 2008-07-05 12:27 am (UTC)I only saw this movie recently, and I loved it. And yeah, the amazing score freakin' branded itself on my brain. As for the performances, I had heard snippets of Day-Lewis' powerful John Huston-type voice, but nothing had prepared me for Dano's Exorcist-style hisses and buzzes. Over the top, and yet it works. Amazing.
