This week's game, The Zantabulous Zorcerer of Zo from Atomic Sock Monkey Press is a fairy-tale setting game by Chad Underkoffler (aka [profile] chadu) that uses their PDQ system. Its very simple, characters and NPCs all have qualities ranked in 2pt values. Like Strong or Fast or Smart. Conflicts are resolved with a 2d6 roll plus or minus any relevant Qualities. So a character with Strong (+2) who had to lift a rock (challenge number 10) would roll 2d6+2. Basic enough...

For ZoZ PCs have +12 in Good Qualities and one -2 Bad Qualities. The character concept I decided on was for a master hunter and outdoorsman. Calaverdes the Hunter (or Cal) loves the wild woods and living out of doors. He's uncomfortable in fact when he has to be in "civilized" towns or cities. He's also proud of his skills and dislikes turning down a challenge...

So for Good Qualities I'd want a +6 (Master) in Hunter, +4 (Expert) in Outdoorsman and +2 (Good) at Moves Like the Wind (he's silent and hard to track). For his Bad Quality Cal has Country Bumpkin -2 (Poor) reflecting on his discomfort in urban environments...

At character creation you can also take one Special Move. This is a bonus +2 Quality that is a specialization on a regular quality. For Cal I think Bullseye! would work, denoting his skill with a bow as part of his Hunter Quality. So when using a bow he gets a +2 and if I can show its related to Hunting it goes to +8...

Characters can also have Magic Star Qualities by lowering one Good Quality a rank. This allows for magical affects. Not something I want, but if I did I could lower Outdoorsman say to +2 and add an * to it. This would allow for me to attempt more magical things with it. Say talking to trees or summoning animals or the like...

Oh and combat wise. When taking damage Characters basically lose a rank level when they take a level of damage. When all ranks are down to zero they are considered unconscious. The GM is encouraged to come up with new Story Hooks to explain these temporary ranks lost...

A spaghetti Western by director Takashi Miike. Though it is lacking in any of his normal "Oh dear gods NO" moments of utter horribleness. Still pretty weird. Fun though and it plays with the standard tropes including the feuding gangs and the wandering nameless stranger...
