New Comics Day 4/29/09
Apr. 29th, 2009 04:51 pmAnd we start with a dissapointing 2nd issue of Marvel Assistant-Sized Spectacular. With an ok Luke Cage story by Wyatt Cenac that doesn't really capture the voices of either Luke or his wife. A confusing story by Adam Warren that introduces Galacta, Daughter of Galactus without any attempt at explaining HOW or WHY Galactus would have a daughter. And finishes with a very dull and poorly drawn Elsa Bloodstone story written by Chris Yost and penciled by Joh James. And then they give the option to vote online to have one of the six stories continued online. Really this doesn't have any of the fun or joy that the old Assistant Editor's Month books used to have...
From there we go to Nova and the War of Kings. Rich, as the new Quasar, infiltrates Ego and World Mind. At the same time the Nova Corps make their first moves in the Shi'ar/Kree war. Which doesn't go well once they encounter the Imperial Guard...
Doom recruits Magneto for the final portion of his master plan. And with his final goal in reach, will Doom be triumphant? And what role does Princess Python play in this final chapter of Dr.Doom and the Masters of Evil?
So apparantly the Great Fables Crossover is too big for just Fables and Jack of Fables. And so we get the first of three issues of The Literals. And Author Kevin Thorn recruits the Genres, as well as Old Sam and Hansel, to help inspire him in rewriting the universe...
A new issue of Jeff Smith's Rasl, a story of dimensional travel and strange science. Rasl confronts the bizarre looking killer Sal and is offered a temporary truce. And we learn some of what the role of the U.S. Navy, Nikolai Tesla and Albert Einstein has been...
And speaking of slow to release books, the 2nd issue of Phonogram: The Singles Club hits. This time we get the night from the perspective of Phonomancer Marquis and a tale of heart-break...
And we finish up with Proof, where the story of Spring-Heeled Jack and beared woman Julia Pastrana continues...
Also this week I got my delayed issue of G0dland. Adam Archer and new allies Leviticus and Vayikra face down N'ull Pax Mizer and then join forces to search for the missing Neela Archer. And back on Earth, Friedrich Nickelhead's assault on DC continues...

Sunshine Cleaning
Apr. 29th, 2009 11:06 pmSingle mom Rose (Amy Adams) is struggling as a house-cleaner when she decides she needs more money to send her son to private school. So she and her sister Norah (Emily Blunt) start a business doing crime scene clean up. The work moves to help the sisters with their relationship with each other and the loss of their mother as children. Also you get Alan Arkin playing the mildly eccentric grandfather character...
A good low-key movie. Charming and generally sweet and amusing. Worth a watch before starting in on all the upcoming hi-octane blockbusters...
