Kate Beaton aka [profile] beatonna writes and draws awesome comics. Comics about Napolean

and fat ponies

and Canada and stuff

She is very cool and I'm glad I found her all on my own with only a little help from Karen Healy and none at all from my roommate [profile] kafeixuesheng who never opened a tab to her comic and then hid my mouse to try and force me to read it. Because someone who can't remember the password to his own LJ totally could never recomend a cool new comic. I mean he bought Okatane once. Oktane! Because it had the same artist as Top 10. Who does that?

Anyway, [profile] beatonna bitchrod awesome. [profile] kafeixuesheng smells faintly of cheese and once wanted to play a midget in a Forgotten Realms game...

Oh Freakazoid. You were too beautiful for this world. Born from the minds of Timm and Dini. Then forced to be more "funny" by Stevie Speilberg. And so Bruce and Paul ran away and left the show to be rushed out by others. Others who gave up and just started putting down whatever they could think of. And so the story of a teen-ager who turned into a wacky super hero and fought man bulls and giant snakes and kissed cute blondes was born. With Ed Asner and Ricardo Montalblan!

Friend Willow is looking for some new super-hero comics featuring People of Color. She's been feeling burned by Marvel and DC less than stellar performance in this area. And then by the whole Platinum Studios buying online comics distributor WOWIO. So if anyone has some ideas for super-hero comics; online or print, big company or small press go ahead and speak up...

Online I'm not coming up with many. But I'm not following a lot of capes themed titles. Magellan does fit the bill. Its got a diverse and large supporting cast, and Go!Anna, one of the two leads is a PoC...

Ongoing in print, the first that comes to mind is Dynamo5. Five people who find that they share a father, the recently deceased hero Dynamo. Each then has one of his powers triggered in them. Strength, Flight, Enhanced vision/energy blast, Shape-shifting, Telepathy. Faerber is great when it comes to super-hero family stuff and writes two other capes books currently, Noble Causes and Gemini...

I'll have to try and think up some more...

ETA: Forgot friend [profile] indigoskynet's webcomic Kismetropolis which has three converging and diverging story lines. One of which focuses on supers...

Red Eye, Black Eye by Thor Jensen

After losing his job, his girl and his apartment all at once Jensen decides to do something different. In this case he buys an Ameripass from Greyhound and travels around the country, couch surfing with online friends. This autobio book covers his trip. Jensen makes for an amusing and intriguing story teller, relating his own "adventures" and the stories of his friends. His simple art style reminds me a lot of James Kochalka. Anyway, its a fun read about the importance of the journey over the destination...
