Beyond being a well-done adaptation, I can't think of a single bad performance from any of the cast. And I hadn't noticed from the advertising how much the actress playing Rue closely resembled one of my nieces. Which made things a bit more disturbing then expected. The only real quibble I'd have, and its a small one, is that the dogs at the end just look like big mean dogs and not the horror-inducing monstrosities described in the book...

Was the direction and shaky cam as bad as the NPR reviewer made it sound?

Not really. My mom can get motion sickness from hand-held camera usage and she was fine during the movie...

There are a few quibbles people have voiced that I agree with. The government is made less evil than in the book. Perhaps they felt they didn't need to beat it over the viewer's head as much. But the runaways turned into Avox, the starvation and need for food, that sort of thing was toned down. In addition to the failed tributes being turned into mutations. (I always thought muttation was a stupid word. If she wanted to call them mutts, she could have just as easily done so from mutation. Muttation just tries too hard.)
