So that was a Star Trek with an emphasis on the actioning style.  Fun though.  I mean the solution to taking down the evil fleet is so dumb.  So silly.  So glouriously foolish that it circles all the way around to amazingly awesome.  Plus of course like most Star Treks, other than last minute rescues, no one actually thinks about what transporter technolgy can do and how it would instantly solve many of the climatic action moments.  But thats really true for most of Star Trek.  And maybe it would have been nice if Idris Elba's bad guy had a motivation better than THE SPACE MADNESS.  But overall, fun.

Well Benedict Cumberbund was pretty good.  Not so stellar that they couldn't have used someone actually Indian to play Khan, but just moving past that pretty good.  And the action stuff was good.  Sure the capabilities of Trek magic tech varied wildly at the need of the plot.  And I kind of wondered in the 3rd act where the fuck the rest of Star FLEET was hanging out.  But the shout-outs to older Trek were cute.  And the background crew who got lines are interesting.  Say a strong C+ or even a B- if you ignore the whole white boy Khan thing...

As part of Mother's Day went to see Star Trek. Fucking. Awesome. Although [personal profile] theweaselking is right in that the science in the movie is just dumb. Not that it mattered. Because FUCKING AWESOME...

Since John M. Ford's death last year I've been looking for a copy of this book. I mean its pretty rare to see a Star Trek franchise book be praised this universally. Even rarer considering the same praise was heaped on Ford's other ST book, The Final Reflection. And the book (both really) fit well into whats known about the ST 'verse at the time. I can see why its see well liked and respected. But I do have a couple nitpicks about it. One is how willingly everyone (both the Enterprise senior officers and their Klingon counterparts) is to just go along with events right up to the final denouement. Also the two mischevious kids felt fairly extroneous to the plot. But other than that it makes for an interesting read...
