Future Quest #3: Writer Jeff Parker, Art Steve Rude, Colorist Steve Buccellato & Letterer Dave Lanphear.  A story pause for some flashback filler on Birdman and the Herculoids.  I'd never actually seen the origin story for the Herculoids before.

Jem & the Holograms #17: Written by Kelly Thompson, Art by Jen Bartel, Colors by M. Victoria Robado & Letters by Shawn Lee.  New artist Jen Bartel steps right up with group pages for the Misfits, Holograms and various beaus.  Plus costume changes and musical numbers.
ROM #1: Written by Christos Gage & Chris Ryall, Pencils & colors by David Messina, Inks by Michele Pasta & Letters by Shawn Lee.  So ROM re-launch.  Gets right into the Dire Wraith secret invader stuff and their whole terror at the arrival of the last Space-Knight.  Plus it looks to be part of a whole IDW Liscensed-verse, along with their Transformers, G.I. Joe and upcoming M.A.S.K. and Micronauts titles.

Howard the Duck #9: Writer Chip Zdarsky, Penciler Joe Quinones, Inkers Joe & Paolo Rivera, Marc Deering & Joe Quinones, Colorists Joe Quinones with Jordan Gibson & Letterer Travis Lanham.  Guest starring actress Lea Thompson.  Who is apparantly the aunt of Eugene "Flash/Agent: Venom" Thompson?  Anyway Lea has been having blackouts and dreams about talking ducks so she consults with the world's best known talking duck.  And then of course the whole thing leads to Mojo of the Mojoverse.  Because of course it does.
The Unbeatable Squirrel-Girl #10: Writer Ryan North, Penciler Erica Henderson, Inker Tom Fowler, Color artist Rico Renzi, Flashback artist Kyle Stacks & Letterer Travis Lanham.  Oh man, I didn't even notice the cover joke with Mole Man sporting the fedora/trilby and saying "M'lday".

Knights of the Dinner Table #234: Head Lion Jolly R. Blackburn, Other Lion Bits Barbara Blackburn, Steve Johanson, David S. Kenzer & Biran Jelke.  Dang.  It only takes nearly everybody laying into him, but Brian may actually be experiancing a moment of clarity and character growth.

For two weeks worth of books, not a very big pile. Starting with the new Astro City about an old lady who runs a roadside attraction/museum of damaged robots.  Of the super-villainous lackey variety...

Then another Princess Ugg, where-in our titular character explains why she's attempting to get thru a "civilized" finishing school.  And then tries to engage in diplomacy with her roommate/archenemy...

The latest Lobster Johnson, mini "Get the Lobster" finishes up with a blimp-board fight to the death...

Another print issue of the Legend of Bold Riley.  Where Riley meets an old lady who invites her to take shelter from a coming storm.  And then goes on a vision quest while looking at some hand-woven rugs.  Also why smoking something...

The second issue of Rocket Raccoon is mostly Rocket jail breaking with the aid of a smuggled in twig-Groot.  Still think the vengeful exes plot-line is dumb...

The New Warriors continue their rescue mission for Haechi and Sun Girl from the new Inhumans.  Except I guess their were two groups of renegade Inhumans?  And one was attempting to use the "recruiting" of Haechi to impress the other?  I think?

Invincible sees the birth of Mark & Eve's daughter as Robot continues his bid for world conquest.  And as part of that he makes the Viltrumites an offer...

And finally Shutter with Kate sitting down with her newly revealed little brother.  And having his age make her realize something new and upsetting about her father...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
The cover to the latest Knights of the Dinner Table does look a bit like the rush job it was, but its very much an excellent tribute to the late Dave Trampier.  Trampier was one of the old school 1st Edition artists for the D&D rule books, as well as the creator of the D&D-ish comic strip Wormy...

Lobster Johnson faces both a cyborg mobster AND a cyborg gorilla in the latest part of the "Get the Lobster!" arc...

Bee & Puppycat take a job to fix a music box on the Snowglobe World.  While still in their pyjamas.  All very cute...

The Lumberjanes go on a dungeon crawl and face guardian beasts and puzzle traps and at one point make use of a Fastball Special.  The 'Janes kind of feel like the perfect compliment to Rat Queens in some ways...

And after much chaos and opposite hijinks and a giant everybody vs. zombies brawl, Finn & Jake finally, FINALLY manage to complete their quest and get Monkey Wizard to kidnap Art Princess in Adventure TIme: the Flip Side...

The burgeoning New Warriors team encounter a few surviving New Men (the High Evolutionary's human/animal hybrids), Caninus and Felinatus.  Who are urged by Scarlet Spider to pick new names.  They go with Jake Waffles and Mr. Whiskers, 'cause why not.  Also Hummingbird loves Speedball's secret dark emo-ness...

Astro City introduces the Dancing Master, ancient God of Love and contemporary of the Hanged Man.  And briefly the cheerful bank robber, Gundog.  And a drone exploring Jupiter's moon Io.  I like when comics show how much further science can go with access to weird super-science...

And finally we've got Shutter, where the assassination attempts keep coming at Kate, almost killing her friend Alain.  Plus an anthromorphic fox wielding a katana and riding a dinosaur...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Another one-shot Astro City issue.  This time focusing on Edward James Carroway, a minor villain of the "clotheshorse" variety.  Which are those guys who dress up in a theme in order to rob banks and the like.  Whose life otherwise is like any other habitual repeat offender...

Picked up the first two issues of Shutter as well.  Which starts out looking like it will be the adventures of a family of cryptologists/adventurers.  But then it switches up and has the whole world be filled with out in the open weirdness.  Interesting so far and I do want to see where all this goes...

Then snagged the next Lumberjanes as well as the first comic version of Bee & Puppycat.  Both very fun, all-ages stuff...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Samurai Jack and the Scottsman go after a stone giant on behalf of some asshole leprechauns in order to get their magical transgender curse lifted...

Having just finished a session involving several level 10+ clerics I question the current campaign in Knights of the Dinner Table.  Sure the evil PCs and their intelligent sword boss have an army of undead.  But I'm pretty sure assaulting a major city means dealing with at least a couple temples that have clergy capable of dropping some Holy Word or heavier divine magic.  Also the Black Hands story where Newt's character gets molested by an owl bear because of reasons may be a step over a humor line...

Tomas, the lead of the Saviors seems to have survived the butchery of the alien resistance he had just joined thru sheer luck.  And the alien attacker's desire to toy with potential prey.  Also artist J. Bone draws a nice Day of the Dead celebration...

Not even a Savage Dragon cameo in his own book, just Malcolm flashing back to some childhood trauma, dealing with some wannabe hangers-on and a super-villain fight.  New baddie Tantrum does a pretty unique visual.  Larsen can often pull out some great character designs...

Invincible gets back to his home Earth only to get dumped by Atom Eve and then raped by one of the female Viltrumite who wants to conceive a child with him.  So yeah, that happens...

Grabbed the first issue of Kaboom!s new Lumberjanes book.  Action girl adventure at a kind of summer camp for adventurer/sort of girl scouts.  I could wish that co-writer Noelle Stevenson was also doing the interior art, by Brooke Allen is pretty talented...

The lastest Adventure Time has Finn & Jake trying to engage in ghostly activities, which they are not very good at.  But it also has BMO going on a pretend date with Ice King, which he is good at.  And in the back-up story Ice King manufactures a civil war in the Jelly Donut kingdom...

So I guess Dead Boy Detectives is an on-going?  I could have sworn it was just a limited.  Anyway Charles and Edwin move into Crystal's mansion after the whole burning down the school.  Or at least the tree house of the mansion.  Plus Edwin takes on a case of a cursed mirror and a pair of 19th century ghost girls...

Another one-shot story for Astro City with a day in the life of the equivilant to the Sorceror Supreme.  Or day in the life of her secretary anyway...

While the First Born consilidates his hold on Olympus Wonder Woman and her allies attempt to rally the restored Amazons to their cause.  Also a brief look at the ongoing torture of Olympian predecessor Cronus...

Conan the Avenger by Fred Van Lente picks up as the new Conan ongoing where the Wood series ended.  Artist Brian Ching is far from bad, though his Conan is kind of skinny.  Plus he gives really huge mouths.  One panel of Conan quaffing wine almost looks like the top of his head is unhinging.  Still, miles better than the guy Van Lente was working with on his Conan limited...

The latest Dark Horse Presents is a bit short on content that interests me much.  Still the first story in it is a start of a "Usagi Yojimbo" tale.  Also some more "Mr. Monster" and "Davey Jones"...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Astro City finishes up its Winged Victory arc with both a super-villain beat down and WV confronting her backers with their views on how to empower women.  I also like how she tells Karnazon he should stop trying to arch her, because he used to be a Big Thing kind of super-villain before he got obsessed with beating her...

Invincible has to team with Other Universe Robot and O.U. Mauler so that he can get back to his universe and stop Robot.  Their plan involves cloning, thus Mauler.  Invincible Universe continues with the upgraded threat of the Lizard League.  The former bottom tier group ends up requiring the entire Guardians of the Globe to be called in, which still might not be enough...

Thomas and Nate head into Mexico to hook-up with an anti-alien cell in the Saviors.  The motley group has plans for testing a new weapon on the aliens running the cops and the cartels in their area.  Though Thomas is still pretty shy of joining any kind of resistance group...

Velvet travels to a covertly legendary masquerade in order to find a off-the-grid Russian former agent.  Who will hopefully provide her with more information to help her find how to clear herself...

So of the eight new-ish New Warriors, we've got Sun Girl and unnamed horn guy in the sewers defending Morlocks; Robbie & Vance leaving New Salem to check the Avengers database on the new bad guys; Kaine, Hummingbird and the new Atlantean girl having their initial Meet Cute/Misunderstanding Fight; and the new Kid Nova still a prisoner of the High Evolutionary...

Lobster Johnson works to solve his latest mystery while dealing with a more hostile than usual NYPD.  And Cindy, Lady Reporter attempts to dig into the past of the Lobster.  Mostly finding awesome if kind of useless stories about pirates and mountain men and cougar shapeshifters...

Rucka's latest, Veil, is interesting.  Though I'm hoping it moves away from being just a creepier version of Fatale's deadly but irresistible lady concept...

Finn, Jake and Marceline go about tracking down Princess Skyblade Harbinger in Adventure Time: the Flip Side as part of a plan to try and get Monkey Wizard back into the Princess Kidnapping game...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
This issue of Knights of the Dinner Table has lots of Weird Pete. First he finishes up his gig as a temp player to run Dave's character as the UT+1 narrowly avoid total disaster while scouting the region where uber-sword Carvin' Marvin is at rest (though Brian still thinks he has a way to game things to his advantage). And then Pete is with his regular Black Hand group as they spend some time gaming at Newt's swanked out game room...

Astro City continues with the character assassination of Winged Victory, although she gets ongoing assistance from Samaratin and the Confessor (and the Confessor's army of Altar Boy agents)...

The 2nd issue of Dead Boy Detectives is actually from January, but I managed to miss it then. Child of celebrity Crystal struggles to fit in at her new boarding school. Or the place that the titular leads were murdered. Which is part of what she is there to investigate...

In order to force Monkey Wizard to kidnap Princess Painting, Finn and Jake team with expert Princess kidnapper the Ice King in Adventure Time: the Flip Side. Which then involves a jewel heist. For reasons...

And a new Lobster Johnson mini, Lobster Johson: Get the Lobster. With the first issue having some berserk pro-wrestlers...

Invincible Universe has the wedding of Kid Thor and Knockout. And like nearly all super-human weddings it goes...less..than perfectly...

And a new arc of Fatale with Jo taking a more aggresive role and seeming to have a long-term plan that involves former writer Nicolas...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Lots and lots of comics for the last three weeks.  With almost half just from this week.  Starting with the latest Dark Horse Presents, with a brand new Hellboy short story set during his Mexican wrestler years.  And a related comic with the final issue of itty bitty Hellboy and a pool party for Abe's sister Eve...

The Massive finishes up its anti-whaling mission with a death and a compromise.  And with the end drawing ever closer to his run on Conan the Barbarian has a great many deaths...

Adventure Time: Candy Capers finishes up as Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun make a few final tries at providing the Candy kingdom with replacement heroes.  All leading to the conclusion that Princess Bubblegum is a bit of a science experiment obsessed jerk.  Which matches well with regular Adventure Time where she explains the origin of the Giant Creeping Gum Ooze to Marceline.  Plus bonus  gender-swap universe story that features an evil boy band vs. Marshall Lee's emo song stylings...

Astro City begins an arc revealing the origins of Winged Victory with guest stars the Samaritan and the Confessor.  Or three of the more obvious homage characters for the book...

Hinterkind has one pack of violent jerks taken down by another pack of violent crazies and with a third pack of violent jerks on the way...

Then doubling down on Marvel, cause two issues a month for titles is a thing for them.  We've got Longshot Saves the Marvel Universe with issue three having a vampire Wolverine, a werewolf Captain America and a mopey Magneto.  And then in the finale Longshot..er..saves the Universe.  And Young Avengers' final battle with Mother is won with teen boy kissing.  And then an epilogue slash dance party...

Daredevil's solution for the Sons of the Serpent problem seems to involve pirate radio and evil cult bible ransoming...

Moving on to Image.  Invincible Universe invades a prison as the Guardians go proactive.  Invincible has Monster Girl work on her issues with being a dead beat dad.  Velvet goes for a glide in her journey to find out who is framing her.  Saga shows that a violent confrontation can only get worse when you mix in a third party.  Pretty Deadly almost has a plot I can follow.  Prophet sort of doesn't but it does have two bigger than kaiju monsters brawling.  And  G0dland presents its long delayed, post-humanist final issue.  Space babies, talking mice and Kirby krackle may all be involved...

Samurai Jack's quest for the time travel threads leads him to what seems to be an idyllc village with a powerful warrior guardian.  But seems to be is hardly ever accurate for Jack...

And finally the second volume of Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard draws to an end with new contributions from Bill Willingham and Brad Thomte, Jackson Sze and Justin Gerard and Cliff Monear...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Only three books for this week, not counting finding the issue I missed for itty bitty Hellboy.  And also from Dark Horse, the finale for the current Resident Alien mini.  And although the murder is solved, it looks like Doc might be having future problems thanks to his illusionary disguise not working on film...

Adventure Time: Candy Capers has the ever more frustrated Peppermint Butler continuing to search for the missing Finn & Jake.  Ian McGinty draws some crazy good Sad/Anger Face Peppermint Bulter.  Oh man, the in house ads have 2014 book being written by Paul Tobin & Collen Coover.  Though drawn by Wook Jin Clark rather than Ms. Coover...

And Astro City takes a look at the interaction of a crooked union boss and the cosmic ambassador from the first issue...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
Sadly my shop didn't have the new Mutliple Warheads one-shot.  I did find the 1st issue from the Resident Alein: the Suicide Blonde mini-series to go with this week's 2nd issue.  Doesn't fully make up for it, but its still a very nice small-town noir series where the lead is also a secret alien...

The latest Adventure Time: Candy Capers has Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun going to a casino as part of the whole tracking down Finn & Jake.  Where they meet and sort of team-up with Agent Princess, the Super Spy Princess.  Plus Pep Butler tries to make a heroic duo of Susan Strong and Ice King.  This was not a good idea...

A visit with the Broken Man gives the reader pieces of Astro City Earth's history.  Like a Call of Cthulu style team of investigators.  Or steam-punk heroine Dame Progress and her "adversary" Mister Cakewalk...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
This most recent Prophet is less about any of the Prophet-brothers and more about the multi-millennial long life of one Diehard, WW2-era super soldier.  With lots of guest artists doing various snapshots of said life...

Savage Dragon has a jail break/riot to deal with, while Malcolm Dragon has past and current girlfriend problems.  And the new She-Dragon must face Virus Dragon in the depths of space...

I haven't paid a huge amount of attention to Daredevil until Waid took over.  So is the Jester actually an established Marvel bad guy?  'Cause they act like he is, but this is the first I can recall seeing of him...

I don't think Belit's plan of holding an artifact for ransom to the Black Stone Cult is a very good one.  I mean I'd think messing with a cult in the world of Conan the Barbarian is much more dangerous in a world where magic and the gods are actual real things and have no problems with throwing giant snakes and shit at people...

Adventure Time: Candy Capers has two team-ups this time around.  Peppermint Butler and Cinnamon Bun go to Hell to check with Death and see if Finn & Jake are dead.  And Lumpy Space Princess and Lemongrab go to "the Summit at Wolf Mountain".  Those poor, poor wolf monsters...

Regular Adventure Time is a 1st-person guest birthday Adventurer.  With Adventure Suits and rogue giants and book-reading...

Astro City does a one-shot looking at the super-powered types he aren't interested in joining in on either side of the capes & tights game.  Focusing mainly on Mattie the telekinetic f/x lady from that long past fake soap opera super-hero one-shot...

Knights of the Dinner Table returns the focus to the UT+1, with both their current campaign (which intersects in an unexpected way with one of their past ones) and the continuing retro strip with Dave running Hacknoia...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
I wonder if what makes me really like this two-issue arc of Astro City is that the lead is a heroic call center employee...

Saga takes a look at how everyone who isn't Prince Robot is doing up to the point before the start of the last issue...

Amnesiac Jo in Fatale has the has been rock band that has taken her in on a slow burn of destruction.  Which could be argueably better than the morass of failure they were in before.  Plus how she once turned a kid into a future serial killer...

Invincible Universe opens with a brawl with mind controlled bank robbing gorillas and then moves to super-psychotic South Korean dictators...

Prophet is still very much Prophet.  At this point you're reading and being amazed or not...

Vicious jail brawl between Mako and Savage Dragon.  Plus Malcolm meets his girlfriends parents.  Things go well, in that super-villains don't attack during their dinner...

And finally Adventure Time: Candy Capers where Peppermint Butler teams up Marceline the Vampire and Treetrunks the Tiny Elephant to go out and solve mysteries.  Treetrunks is the maverick on the edge partner...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
The second issue of the relaunched Astro City features the support crew for Honor Guard.  Essentially the 911 operators for the supers set...

Young Avengers picks up with the team a few months after the end of the first story arc.  With a recap of their crazy adventures we all missed.  And then Prodigy shows up to get their help in finding Speed...

Daredevil starts up a new storyline with Matt getting a visit from one of the people who bullied him as a kid.  Who is in need of some legal aid...

Invincible Universe spends an issue sort of focusing on Best Tiger.  Focusing mostly on how he'd go about killing everyone else on his team.  For reasons...

Savage Dragon is all about the Dragon.  Well original Dragon and Son of Dragon and Son of Dark Dragon.  Plus that loveable sociopath Dart II...

And then its ADVENTURE TIME!  Where just as Adventure Time with Fionna & Cake comes to a close, Adventure Time Candy Capers begins...
lurkerwithout: (Reading cat)
So the big thing for this week is the return of Astro City, this time around being put out by Vertigo.  In addition to some old faces (including a somewhat surprising call back) we get new characters like American Chibi, the Broken Man and Telseth of the Kvurri.  Also Busiek is still working with Brent Eric Anderson as his artist and Alex Ross on covers...

Also this week, another Empowered one-shot, "Animal Style".  Like the previous Warren only provides a few pages of art, with the majority of the issue, where Emp faces off against a gang of animal-themed power armor dudes robbing a super-car show, done by John Staton and Guru eFX on colors...

A new Knights of the Dinner Table, with the focus split between the regular gang's ongoing campaign (which looks to be moving into place for a big set-up to celebrate the magazine's upcoming 200th issue) and the now runaway hit of Crush's crime rpg campaign...

Invincible Universe has Chubacabre working on the whole making amends Step of his 12 Steps.  Here by visiting the family of Cast Iron, the Serbian hero who died saving him...

And finally Savage Dragon wraps up the whole Yellowthe Claw story arc, clearing off more of the super-powered cast to D.C. and the S.O.S. and a bloody return of Dart II...
