Been listening to the new Flogging Molly album all day. Pretty good. Not great like "Swagger" or "Within a Mile of Home". But some solid songs with a bit a departure from their regular style...

Sore. All. Over.

FM, as in previous years, was awesome. Even if the crowd wasn't as good at the sing (yell) along bits this time around. No new songs, but they opened with several of the songs they previously closed with. And also did a few acoustic numbers...

The warm-up bands, Celtic Cowboys and The Bollocks, were both pretty good. Nothing really outstanding, but enjoyable. Managed to get some decent crowd reactions from the early arrivers. But the opening act. Metric. I'm just baffled as to who picked them. Don't get me wrong, they're a decent enough band. In another setting I might have even enjoyed them in concert. But they so didn't fit this show. Though, bless her, after the first couple songs the leader singer did her best to get the crowd going. But really, wrong style for a St. Patty's FM crowd...

I'm going to the Flogging Molly concert. But if their concert was regularly on a different date I'd go then. I don't celebrate St. Patrick's Day since I'm not a: Catholic b: Irish and/or c: a drunk

The only "real" conerts I've attended were both for Flogging Molly. What made it so magical? Weren't you listening? FLOGGING. MOLLY.

Back from the concert. So tired. So awesome. But first the negatives...

The concert had a change of venue from the Mesa Amphitheater (where they were last year) to the Tempe Beach Park. Which has shit parking. And the overflow was about half-a-mile away. So I ended up using one of the many pay garages in Tempe's Mill area. Happily, after losing my parking ticket at the concert, the guy in the box let me slide and didn't bother charging me. So that was cool of him. Also, the Mesa Amphitheater had a large flat area in front of their band area and then a tiered little hill spot. Meaning an easy seperation of the Mosh area from the non-Mosh area. Tempe Beach Park is one big flat park thingy. Meaning one big Mosh area sprung up and several smaller Mosh areas sprung up. Meaning people kept running into me. Next year I wear regular shoes...

Positives: Both opening bads KICKED ASS.

The first was the Cherry Cokes. An all-Japanese Celtic Folk Punk band. Truly the world is more awesome than any have given it credit. Irish Folk songs sung in Japanese. Wow. I mean how the hell did he manage to find SIX other people in Japan who wanted to specialize in Celtic Folk/Punk fusion?

Then it was the Rev. Payton's Big Damn Band. Another Folk/Punk fusion. This time Southern Folk. Again wow. Last year I was impressed how the trombone player for the Voodoo Glow Skulls could just own the stage. This year it was a woman playing a washboard...

But again once Flogging Molly hit the stage it blew everything else away. Yeah those moshing people were annoying. But FM just fires the crowd up. They played several songs off their new album Float. Including the title song and "Requiem for a Dying Song". Both great. And for the official finale everyone from both opening acts came out and started singing with them. Which was just bad ass. Of course King was convinced to come out for an encore after repeated chants of Ole and Flogging Molly. He started with a solo version of "Black Friday Rule", though the rest of the band came out to join in for the final chorus. And then they closed up with "Seven Deadly Sins"...

So. Fucking. Awesome.

So in the interest of budget trimming I go to eMusic to cancel my membership. They're a great service, and 75 tracks a month for 20 bucks is a steal. But you know, I've got plenty of music now. I can take a break. But whats on their new arrival list? Flogging Molly's new album. Ok, you win another month you evil, manipulative bastards...

*Adds to save list*

Back from the concert. Well actually back an hour ago, but was watching Rome. How to best describe it? Escalating. Yeah, that works...

Starting at 4:30 was local punk band Numbers on Napkins who played for about half an hour. Decent band, kind of Bad Religion sound to them. Though they have the problem as many punk bands, where the power bass lines tend to overwhelm the vocals. Managed to get a few good reactions from the smallish crowd present. And like every following band made reference to see who was still hungover from the St. Patrick's Day concert. Even the start of a small mosh going...

The next band, The Liar's Handshake, had a more folk/punk thing going on. Little bit like The Dropkick Murphys. They had a slighter larger bunch leave the stands for the field area in front of the stage. And they also managed to get the crowd going somewhat. Even bigger mosh group, slightly bigger crowd pops. Both these bands were fairly good and I'll probably see if I can track down some of their work online...

Then the Voodoo Glow Skulls hit. They didn't even try and get the crowd going. They just assumed that everyone would follow their lead. Which pretty much happened. Actual spontaneous crowd reactions and a real mosh started going. Band is all high-octane energy and ska/punk fusion. Plus they had what was the most aggresive horn player. Until now I'd never thought of the damn trombone as a hard-core punk instrument. But their guy just worked that horn like he wanted to batter everyone into submission...

After them it was Authority Zero, who opened with "Drunken Sailor" to a HUGE fucking pop. They started hard and just kept hammering away and carrying everyone with them. Their lead singer thrashed around like he wanted to smash the stage beneath his feet. Now the field crowd really filled up. Mosh pit, the crowd yelling back lyrics, even crowd surfing. Authority Zero finished up with their lead stage diving and crowd surfing thru their finale. Now the crowd seemed fired up fully...

Not. Even. Close.

Opening with "Screaming at the Wailing Wall" Flogging Molly got an explosive crowd reaction as all of us rose to our feet. And it was a reaction that didn't let up as they played for close to an hour and a half. Giant fucking mosh. Pretty much always two to four people crowd surfing. The field in front of the stage packed. And everyone screaming along with the chorus. I'm still a little hoarse. They even debuted a couple of new songs, "Reqieum For a Dying Song" and "Afloat". They even came back for an encore after the crowd began chanting; Flogging Molly! *clap clap clap* Though at first I thought everyone was chanting "Lets go Murphys". Which would have been odd...

Fucking awesome show...

Well, the St. Patricks' Day concert is sold out again. Not that I could have gone. But they've added a second show the next night. Which is a Sunday. I can make that. Now to see if I can find someone sober who also wants to go, so that I have the option to drink...

Went down to Best Buy to pick up a new mouse (got a Logitech cordless) and grabbed the new Flogging Molly album on an impulse. Its 2 discs, the first being a DVD with a documentary on the band. Haven't watched that yet. The 2nd disc has 5 acoustic songs and 5 live ones. And after listening to the live part I'm kicking myself more and more for not getting out of work last St. Patrick's Day so I could have seen them. So. Fucking. Awesome...
