Got around to reading the first trade for this series and one part of the final story in it bugged me. There is a great deal of talk that goes around about how the DC editor's have it out for the Giffen era Justice League characters. Some of it serious, most of it not. And many of the Giffen era characters have gotten the short stick since Identity Crisis. The Dibneys. Max Lord. Blue Beetle. The Rocket Reds. But another writer seems to have his work undone almost as much. James Robinson and his run on Starman. The Dibneys again. Black Condor and Phantom Lady being part of the butchery of the Freedom Fighters. The Rann/Thanagar war after Robinson put a peace treaty between them and other alien societies. Makes me glad NOT to see anyone trying to use Jack Knight, the Shade or Opal City in general...
But that brings me to the Suicide Squad story in this first Checkmate trade. Where they go into Myanamar to liberate a kid meta that the government there is using as a power source. Which also reminds me of the similar use the Society put Firestorm. And all I can wonder is, why is NO ONE on DC Earth trying to exploit the cosmic energy exploiting technology left behind by Ted "Starman" Knight before his death stopping the Mist? Hell why does the basic technology level of DC Earth (with some notable exceptions) mostly match that of regular Earth? Shouldn't recovered Braniac and Luthor technology be used in making better toasters and vaccuums? Why isn't Ford and Toyota and everyone else looking to finish work on Knight tech to be the first to get a flying car on the market? The only people trying utilize alien advanced science are the ones making more super-humans?
This bothers me less in Marvel, where you'd think the same questions would apply to Kree and Shi'ar technologies or the inventions of Reed, Von Doom or even Pym. But Marvel has a different feel to their setting. One where the technology baseline being different from the real world wouldn't fit as well...
