Fresh garlic is hard to crush without a pestle. Or other crushy device. Ended up using a little too much, but still good. Full of pasta now...

Yes, that's how I do it. If you have a cutting knife (not just a butter or steak knife), take the flat of the blade, place it over the clove, and then press down with the heel of your hand.

I know you're short on cash, but if you ever have a little extra, consider a garlic press. They don't cost too much and will make adding garlic to your food easier.

I've always used a garlic smasher - the "crushy device" in question. It produces teeny tiny little chopped=up garlic pieces, and is fun. What's not to love?
