Off a comment for someone else's review of the current Batman R.I.P. story arc (bolding mine)...

I'm going to be fairly annoyed if, after all the hype and "OMG Batman changed 4evar!!1!!" crap we've been hearing since the first RIP solicits, the Batman laid to rest is just the Batman of Zur En Arr. Getting really tired of false threats of change and total shake-ups by the Big Two.

The idea that either DC or Marvel would make any REAL lasting changes to their properties? Its laughable. And yet both hype their Event story lines like they WILL have some kind of noticeable effect. Believing that hype, even for a moment, is foolish...

Yeah, the Batman Cataclysm story arc was insufferable. They had said they weren't going to do anything like that for 13 months, but it felt like it had only been two. Just big plot after big plot. I was really getting sick of it. It wasn't the last straw, but it was a straw on the pile that got me to stop reading comics.

I haven't even read any of it but the first time I heard "Batman RIP" I thought, "Well isn't that going to be funny when all these fans are expecting this big clunky event and Grant is going to throw them another Silver Age style story wrapped up in disquise?"

I think we are paying the price for having a whole section of our fandom that grew up on "OMG GRITTY BLOOD SERIOUS BUSINESS" comics in the 80's and 90's. Those kids just don't know how to kick back and have some fun.
