lurkerwithoutI put off getting this one, even though I've been a huge fan of Hamilton's Anita Blake series. All the reviews of this one from the people I know were all so...disappointed. And yeah I feel the same way. Not because of the sex (way too much and too purple prose romance novel like in description). And not just because the mystic power levels keep creeping up (seriously who has a mystic bad ass be the Prince of Cape fucking Cod?). But its more that its missing all the stuff I liked from earlier books...
While Anita uses her spooky necro powers, theres no zombies or zombie raising going on. I'm 4/5 of the way done and Anita's drawn down ONCE. I mean not one single person has gotten shot or stabbed. And the only real fight was between Richard and some werelion. Plus no cops. I really miss the cops stuff. And worst of all, I kept hearing that Edward was going to be a big part of this book and he doesn't show up AT ALL. He doesn't even get mentioned...
Its still an enjoyable read. But I'd rate previous books at like a 4 or 5 out of 5 and this one barely manages a 3. Though on the plus side the wangst levels aren't as bad as I'd gotten the impression they would be. So thats good. I fucking LOATHE wangsty vampire fiction...
