Blood sugar

My blood sugar tested at 205. TWO OH FUCKING FIVE!?! How? I've eaten a bowl of m&ms and not got that kind of spike. All I'd eaten since waking up was two of those snack size cereal boxes. One of Special K, one of Raisan Bran. Would the bran spike me that much? Nothing else I've eaten since yesterday should have hit me that hard.

Date: 2005-08-30 06:13 pm (UTC)Your sugar is usually at its highest point 2 hours after you eat. More for fatty foods, supposedly, but I usually check 2 hours after to see what it is.
Cereal, bread, pasta, and other refined sugars are most likely to cause your sugar to spike. Complex carbs are the best way to go, and small servings. whole grain wheat bread instead of white, for instance If you want to eat other stuff, just test to see how different foods react. You can still eat almost anything, just need to time it right, and also eat smaller portions.
Another thing you need to watch out for, if they didn't tell you is too low blood sugar, which can be deadly. IF you dip into the 60-70 area, get some food in you. One of the quickest ways to do that in an emergency is cake frosting in a tube, which can be squeezed in your mouth and massaged into your gums if you are almost passing out. I usually carry a couple of packs of peanut butter crackers in the car as they can stand the heat and are just the right amount of carbs to get you over.
Of course you might already know all this, but in case not...
Do be careful, though. I had a vision scare which frightened the hell out of me not too long ago. Wasn't related, but they showed me how diabetes does cause irreversible damage.
