Well it was my turn up tonight, so I ran them thru the second half of U1: A Sinister Secret at Saltmarsh. And at one point things looked a little rocky for the group, but Noah's fighter, Goldy stepped up and took care of business...
So they manage to sneak up on the smuggler ship, even taking out one of the smugglers and the bosun without anyone catching on. And then when Miles' thief TRIES to be sneaky, they're heard and the fight starts. As the captain and ships mage send down a pair of smugglers, another moves in from the forecastle. Friar Donnely manages to blind one with a light spell at the same time the guy gets tagged by Brendan's magic missile spell. Then Miles begins playing with another while Noah advances on the captain. Goldy nails the smuggler captain with an eye gouge attack just as the mage hits his boss with an enlarge spell.
Next up Miles takes down his opponent and turns to help the friar. The captain initiative rolls are abysmal and so Noah gets to attack AGAIN before the now blind giant can swing his bastard sword. And he crits. To the side of the captain's head. A level 13 crit that ends up doing 32 points of damage, KOing the dude.
Which is about when the ship's mage drops Miles, Friar Donnely and the smuggler they're facing with a sleep spell.
Meanwhile Brendan has been climbing up to the crow's nest in an attempt to get at the smuggler armed with a crossbow. And he nails the guy with a Kachirot's Exploding Palm spell, sending the poor bastard to plunge 40' to the decks below. Unfortunately Brendan hoses a Dex check to maintain his balance and follows the smuggler down. Both survive, BARELY, but are out for a good LONG while.
At this point the two town guards who were serving as rowers for the group, climb the ropes to lend a hand. And the ship's mage gets ready to bolt. Except the 1st mate, a grel named Salt Hawk arrives leading the remaining smugglers and unleashing his Grel War Cry. Which causes all his opponents to lose an action for a round (though I should have given Noah a save for that at -5. Oh well.). Plus the cry wakes up the lizardmen sleeping on board, waiting to make an arms deal. So they come out now also. With their pet flying monkey.
So heres Noah's fighter, backed by a couple 0-level guards. Facing a Grunge Elf, dual wielding a magic longsword and eerie black rapier. Looking all bad ass like only a Grel can. Who's backed by a 3 or 4 smugglers and a trio of lizardmen. And a flying monkey.
But the Grel looks to be giving the group a chance to parley, mostly 'cause he needs a couple moments to cut the captain's throat and take over the ship. So Noah kicks awake Miles and Friar Donnely. And begins tossing trash talk back and forth with the Grel. Making it a personal duel for the captaincy.
The two go at it. Salt Hawk has the edge in speed and manages to hit Goldy, several times. But I roll crap for damage and barely faze Noah. He's missing a lot though. Then he gets tired of facing dual blades, so he starts taking called shots to the Grel's longsword wielding arm. Eventually he scores high enough and cleaves the damn thing off. After that its just a matter of keeping the 1st Mate/Captain busy while he bleeds out.
So Goldy is the new captain of the Sea Ghost. But Noah's worried that the crew might mutiny on him or attack when Goldy's back is turned. So he starts beating on the ship's mage.
"Whats your name?"
"Puno.."
WHAM!
"I don't like that answer! Whats your name?"
"Pun..."
STOMP! And the mage's right hand is broken.
"What's your name!?"
"What do you want my name to be?"
Snap! And the fingers on the OTHER hand are broken.
"You're Goldy's Bitch! Now whats your name?"
"Goldy's Bitch?"
"Thats right!"
After that the group sells the lizardmen the weapons they'd bought (mostly to avoid a fight) and sail back to Ditmarsh. There they manage to trade the MASSIVE haul of smuggled booze and silk to another ship in port and train up. Well Noah's Goldy and Miles' Kendall train up. Brendan doesn't have enough Eps for 4th, so he just learns some more skills.
Oh and they rescued a sea elf prisoner from the Sea Ghost named Agrippa, who pledged himself to serve Goldy for 10 years. One of those Wookie life debt things.
