I'm kind of tired and rambling
Aug. 21st, 2010 03:25 amSo a throwaway joke on comics blog about how Absorbing Man was Roman Catholic got me thinking. First that "Nah, he converted to Reformed Sect of Loki in prison". But that made me think how super-hero comics rarely touch on the religous aspects of self-declared gods walking around and teams that on occasion have actual members of the Heavenly Host and shit. Oh sure, you get the occasional minor bit (like Morrison having Azael try and give a lecture at a Sunday School class) but little else. Unless it involves people joining snake or demon cults where they can wear robes and then heroes can bust them up to save the girl who's about to be sacrificed. But there are pagans who follow "old" school pantheons in the real world. They should be much bigger groups when Thor and Hercules are actually walking around and punching out monsters in downtown Manhatten. Then I started thinking about how heroes only go after fringe cults. You never see them take on bad guys associated with mainstream religions. Like a story where the Avengers go after a pedophile priest being shielded by the Vatican. "THE AVENGERS ASSAULT THE PAPAL SUPER FORTRESS! CAN EVEN EARTH'S MIGHTIEST HEROES TRIUMPH AGAINST MOTHER SUPER-SUPERIOR! CAPTAIN CARDINAL! AND PAPAL INFALLABILITY MAN!"
I bet Garth Ennis would be willing to write it...
