A massive haul of comics this week. Not just from the pull list, but from several Amazon orders. The last two trades for Y: The Last Man, volumes 1 & 3 of Marvel Adventures: The Avengers and vol. 1 of MA: Iron Man and vol. 4 of Usagi Yojimbo. And then ten titles from my weekly pulls...

Starting with the latest Knights of the Dinner Table. With the Knights heading to HackCon, though they have problems with a jerk Con security guard in a Stormtrooper suit. And Weird Pete, Squirrelly and Gordo hit the road in Pete's ancient VW for the con. Which also has problems. Also Spoony's review of the "classic" movie Yor: the Hunter From the Future. Sadly, I've learned from him that Kenzer is planning on dropping his column at issue 150. He's been kind of bummed about that...

Next up is the 3rd issue of Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files. With Harry laying some smite down on a Black Dog before heading back to the zoo to track a hag...

We've also got another Hellboy one-shot B.P.R.D. The Ectoplasmic Man, with an expanded origin story for Johann Kraus. I really love the Mignola cover on this one. Also Arcudi's art seems much nicer than the previous Abe Sapien issue...

Also from Dark Horse is the start of the next F.E.A.R. Agent story arc. Heath and the Russian Nikolai may or may not have engaged in some time travel. They're definitely having to deal with a nasty bug problem though...

Jack of Fables continues with its Old West story. With Bigby on his trail, outlaw leader Jack has to find the masked man who bought the silver bullets he had made for dealing with the Fabletown Sheriff. A masked man in Montana with an Indian travelling companion. Now, who could that be. And just to keep the humor quotient up, a bonus Babe the Blue Ox page. With him wearing a cute cowboy hat...

And we've got the final issue of The Programme. A comic where I was more into the basic high concept than the actual execution. Maybe if the art hadn't been a muddy, confusing mess (note to self: avoid C.P. Smith in the future) then Milligan's writing would have seemed stronger this time around...

Ok, both Dan Slott AND Christos Gage are listed as the writers now for Avengers: The Initiative. And even being a Secret Invasion tie-in its a very strong issue. I loved the Hawai'i team, the Pointmen. The East Coast's first defense against giant monsters, undersea armies and Fin Fang Foom. Which is why they get Devil-Slayer. WHO IS TOTALLY BAD ASS AWESOME. Though I wish some of these teams would show up for more than a beat-down or a single page or two. Also Triathalon/3-D Man? DOUBLE AWESOME. Especially with the original showing up at his "graduation" to show his support of the continuation of his legacy...

Then another finale, this time for Power Pack: Day One. And Katie's "solution" to the Snark problem is pure genius. Hint: A demand for a pony is involved...

And lastly we've got both First Class books. X-Men: First Class has the group of young mutant heroes dealing with a potential new class-mate. Aaron Stack, the Machine Man! And Wolverine: First Class Kitty "Cat" Pryde rallies the New Men against the bestial hordes of the Man-Beast! I loves me some X-books that have are missing 95% of the x-wangst...

Yes, I know its long past Sunday. But I was distracted and sleepy and lazy until now...

kimmie66 written and illustrated by Aaron Alexovich, letters by Robert Clark
Burnout written by Rebecca Donner, illustrated by Inaki Miranda, gray tones by Eva de la Cruz, letters by Jared K Fletcher

I missed Ross Campbell's Water Baby. But other reviews have been pretty luke-warm on it, so I've been in no rush...

To start we'll look at kimmie66. A futurist scifi book. Telly Kade is a 23rd century teen. And like most teen's she spends much of her time living in VR worlds. People are supposed to pick one "theme" or Lair and just hang there. For Telly and her friends its a pseudo-WoD setting where they can play at Gothy monster-lite. And Telly is happy with this. She can avoid her creep of a brother and its easier to have friends in the Virtual. Until she gets a suicide note from her friend Kimmie66. A note that leads her from one Lair to another until in search of Kimmie66's "ghost"...

First off, as I mentioned previously, I love Alexovich's art. And the story is another plus. This probably ranks with Confessions of a Blabbermouth and The Re-Gifters as the best of the line. Telly isn't perfect, she's a kid struggling to deal with loss. Good book...

Next we've got Burnout. Teenage Danni and her mom have just moved to a new town. Again. Where Danni's mom gets involved with a local man and the two move in together. Thrusting Danni into sharing a room with her possible future "brother". Brooding hottie Haskell. Finding out that Haskell sneaks out every night, Danni eventually follows him. She learns that he's been engaging in anti-logging activities, spiking trees and the like. Kid wants to be an eco-warrior. And if it'll impress Haskell, so does Danni. The two quickly become a hot & heavy secret couple, while spending their nights on nuisance attacks on the local industry. Of course it all ends in tears and fire...

This one's very teen melodrama. Danni wants to belong to somewhere. Or someone. Or something. Which means she gets drawn into Haskell's drama. I'm still not sure how much I like this one. The art is clean and sharp. And Danni and Haskell seem like teens. Of course teens annoyed me even when I was one. So its a well written book. But if I wasn't trying to check out the entire line as it came out, I don't know how much interest I'd have in the story...
