May. 29th, 2008 09:39 amMichael Caine as Fowler, a British reporter in 1952 Vietnam towards the end of the French Indochina War. Do Thi Hai Yen is his mistress Phuong. Brendan Fraiser as Pyle, is attached to an American medical mission and becomes friends with Fowler and Phuong. A love triangle eventually comes up as Fowler is married with a wife unwilling to grant him a divorce and Pyle feels he can give Phuong a better life...
Of course the majority of the movie is a flashback, with the opening being Fowler identifying Pyle's body for the French authorities and then brining the news to Phuong. So you see the relationship between the three develop, as well as learning about Pyle's real reason for being in Vietnam...
Caine is always at his best when he's allowed to play things low-key and can deliver a great deal with just a haughty look or shell-shocked stare. And Fraser should do more drama. He reminds me of Keanu Reeves. They both have very limited range as an actor. But when they're put in roles that fall IN that range, both are excellent and under-rated...
