lurkerwithout: (Puss in boots)
The 1957 version, with Glen Ford. Ford is outlaw leader Ben Wade. While robbing a stage coach he meets rancher Dan Evans (Van Heflin). Evans watches as Wade gets away, unable to do anything. Later, Wade gets captured in Bixby when he strays from the rest of his gang to smex a pretty bar maid. Evans gets hired to take Wade to Contention City and then put him on the train to Yuma and the prison...

The rest of the movie is mostly banter between the two men, up until the final confrontation between Wade's gang and the rancher. A strong movie, distinguished from most Westerns of the time by being dialog and character driven. Not too surprising once you see that its based on a very early Elmore Leonard story...
