My Big Fat Supernatural Honeymoon
Jan. 16th, 2008 04:37 amA follow-up anthology to Elrod's previously edited My Big Fat Supernatural Wedding anthology. Though only one of the stories seems to be an actual sequel. But lets look at each.
"Stalked" by Kelly Armstrong follows her werewolf family from Bitten. And like that book its a well-written piece that just doesn't click with me. I just don't LIKE any of the characters involved in this series...
"Heorot" by Jim Butcher is a Harry Dresden story that goes into the background of Gentleman Jim Marcone supernatural bodyguard. And also involves a kidnapped woman from a beer festival...
"Roman Holiday" by Rachel Caine is the only sequel. Where the newly married captain and heroine from the previous story get to deal with OTHER crews of eternally, damned sailing ships. For given values of damned and eternal of course. Oddly this one I liked more than the first, the exact opposite reaction I had to Caine's Weather Warden series...
"Her Mother's Daughter" by P.N. Elrod is a quick and light Jack Fleming tale. Which involves a kidnapped groom, a VERY angry bride and mobsters...
"Newlydeads" by Caitlin Kittridge has to do with a pseudo Constantine type and his partner a cop and supernatural conduit or something. The story seems pretty well tied to whatever supernatural series Kittridge normally writes and left me cold so I ended up skimming it...
"Where the Heart Lives" by Marjorie M. Liu is has the feel of a deLint or Brust "modern" fairy tale. Not surprising in a story with vaguely witch like hermit women, stolen brides and lonely sidhe queens...
"Cat Got Your Tongue" by Katie MacAlister seems to be a prequel or something to her series. I think. Its another one that didn't do anything for me. With a haunted castle, a surprise family curse (that relies VERY heavily on one character not having any real clue as to their family history) and estranged spouses...
"Half of Being Married" by Lilith Saintcrow feels like a World of Darkness fan fiction. One where Buffy's nerdy Slayer cousin marries a werewolf vampire hunter. Another one I just skipped for the most part...
And finally there is "A Wulf in Groom's Clothing" by Ronda Thompson. Which just has the feel of a bonus chapter to a Harlequin romance. With a tacked on werewolf plot. Plus the writer overuses a couple phrases, which adds into the Romance Fic feeling of the story. Its not terrible. Just nothing special...
Sadly I wouldn't recomend this collection. Nothing really stands out beyond the Elrod and Butcher stories. Luckily this is my room-mate's book so I didn't spend money on it...
