Rereading The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch. And I'm fairly certain I posted both these bits before, but I'm going to put them up again. Because they're that good...

"Ah, yes, but science discourgages questions too, say the cults and religions. You don't take our views seriously, you don't allow that sort of question. You try to stop us putting our ideas into school science lessons as alternatives to your world view.

To some extent, that's true - especially the bit about science lessons. But they are science lessons, so they should be teaching science. Whearas the claims of the cults and the creationists, and the closet theists who espouse intelligent design, are not science."

This is so very, very, VERY true. I'm a thiest/pagan myself. I believe that everything was CREATED by an act of will by Something. But thats an act of faith on my part. There is NOTHING that backs up that belief. Its not provable or disprovable. And thats why it, and any other creationist/ID belief doesn't belong being taught in a science class. Its not an "alternative". Its not a "differing viewpoint". Its an act of faith and belief that has NOTHING TO DO with provable/disprovable fact...

Oh and this footnote just makes me laugh:

"*According to Isaac Asimov, the most practical and dramatic victory of science over religion occurred in the seventeenth century, when churches began to put up lightning conductors."

Score one for the Atheist Jew...
