The Cuckoo
Mar. 22nd, 2007 01:22 amA movie about Finland towards the end of WWII. Somewhat. Ok let me just post the plot summary off the dvd envelope:
"A few days before Finland pulls out of World War II, Veiko, a Finnish sniper, is denounced by his comrades for being a pacifist and a reluctant fighter. As punishment, the young man is shackled to a rock and forced to wear a German uniform, knowing full well that Russian soldiers have orders to shoot Germans sight. Veiko escapes and forms an unlikely bond with a woman farmer (and other refugees) who are just trying to stay alive."
First off, if I didn't have that summary it would have been around the mid point of the movie before I figured ANY OF THAT OUT. There is basically no attempt to explain the setup at ALL. And its only when Veiko attempts to communicate with the ONE other refugee (a Russian escaped prisoner who was being sent back for political crimes) that you might learn any of this. Two, this is a freaking DULL movie. Next to nothing happens. There are few mildly interesting bits (like how Veiko unshackles himself), but mostly this is a movie frustrating in its lack of forward momentum. And then it adds a "twist" ending...
Mostly what I learned from this is that cute Finn widowed farm women are easy and also have many mystic shaman skills...
