Ok, some ongoing title recomendations
Oct. 28th, 2004 08:50 amWell I follow a bunch of titles. So I'm only going to recomend six.
First up: Fables by Bill Willingham, published by Vertigo/DC. Basically all those fairy tale and legends characters are real people. And they've been driven from their homelands into this world by a mysterious Adversary. This series always leaves me wanting more. And the characters. Bigby Wolf, Snow White, Goldilocks, Prince Charming and on and on. Plus most of the issues are already available in trade paperback, so you can get all the previous story arcs without having to hunt the back issue bins...Currently at issue 30 with one special issue (a great retelling of the Alamo called "The Last Castle")...
Number Dos: 100 Bullets by Brian Azzarello, published by Vertigo/DC. A wild ride of conspiracies and crime fiction. The basic premise WAS this. A mysterious Agent Graves shows up and gives someone a briefcase. Inside is a gun, 100 bullets and proof that most of their problems are someone else's fault. The gun and the bullets are TOTALLY untraceable. If used NO ONE will investigate. And behind it all is a conspiracy that goes back to the Colonization of the Americas. And oh my the characters you run across...Not just the major players, but the little people who make up the background. When it comes to gritty, street level fiction Azzarello is the Man...Currently at issue 54, but again lots of trades to help in the catching up...
Now on to some super hero stuff.
First is Savage Dragon by Eric Larsen, published by Image. Ok, right up front this is a HUGE investment in back issues. But one I definately think is worth it. The first year or two is available as trades, but their are lots of cross-overs and one shots and mini series and spin offs. But Larsen is good about putting in recaps every dozen or so issues to help people keep up.
I'm not even going to try and sum up the history of this book. Its just to long. But this has been and still is one of the most consistantly quality books out there. Larsen is the only guy at Image who seems to have been in it to create a great comic rather than make some bucks. And if you're a fan of classic Kirby and Lee and all them then this is the book for you. Don't be afraid, just jump in.
Next book: PS238 by Aaron Williams, published by Dorkstorm. I love this book. A grade school for super-human kids. Done by the guy behind Nodwick. Its funny and cute and moving and everything. BUY THIS BOOK! Ok, its only up to issue 8 and its bimonthly, so no huge investment.
Next up: Supreme Power by Strazinski (yes the Bab 5 guy), published by Marvel. A retelling of Marvel's old Squadron Supreme (which was a remake of DC's universe by Marvel). This is definately a Mature Audiences title. It moves forward slowly. But its well written and Mike's got a good track record (not counting my occasional meltdowns over a certain 3 remaining issues). This book is worth following, Strazinski, builds slowly to a big story. But anyone who followed Bab 5 should already know that. Currently at issue 12.
Last, but far from least: Invincible by Robert Kirkman, published by Image. Kirkman seems to be writing everything for Marvel that Bendis isn't, but this is book that put him on the mainstream map. Only two trades out right now collecting the first couple story arcs. Which is good, because back issues are hard to find. But the book is about a teen-age super-hero. One who's dad is close to being a SuperMan type. Lots of fun super hero stuff AND wonderful teen angst. Without being annoying angst. Its luverly. At issue 16 right now.
