So after much delays, due to testing of tournament adventures and my trip to the hospital, we (oh lets call them The Short Adventurers) ride again. Literally, as we decided to head out with a trade caravan to investigate a treasure map we'd found.

A normal HackMaster style journey, meaning we were attacked near a dozen times between towns. Wild dogs, monk-like gibbons, venomous sparrows and bandits all beset us, and all were defeated. Letting us reach the first stop on the treasure map, a partially destroyed town. But unfortunately (or fortunately depending on how you look at it) we get guilted into helping the caravan continue on even further. A chance for more "random" encounters and eps. But a delay of several weeks before we can get back to try and solve this treasure map.

And as we rest up for the night before we're attacked again. This time by a mated pair of Ogre Lords (like regular ogres, but bigger and smarter). Thanks to several good called shots and a lucky crit, they go down (literally in this case, falling on the dwarf and the gnome), but not before they almost smoosh the pixie-faerie.

My aardvarkian even managed to finish off one of the Ogre Lords despite my normal pitiful dice rolls...

... but I'm intrigued by your "aardvarkian" character. Is this an actual, documented race/class in HackMaster, or were you allowed to design your own species? How do you think the character race/class compares to what we've seen of the three Aardvarkians in Cerebus?

The race was published in the HackMaster "official" fanzine HackJournal. Which made it official. Of course the powers-that-be have since said that there won't be any other races/classes added unless its in a regular supplement...

The description of the race in the article and from the Hacklopedia of Beasts article definately show that the race is inspired by early "Cerebus" issues. For example, some of the racial traits Chubs has include a misogynist attitude, a low-tolerance for alcohol and the tendancy to smell really, REALLY bad when wet...

Other things (like their skill at fighting insects and burrowing claws) show inspiration form making a humanoid aardvark...

As to HackMaster itself, the system plays much like 1st Edition AD&D with a workable skill system, Honor (like in Oriental Adventures) and a variety of added races and classes. The game books are also loaded up with "Garyspeak", basically an exageratted version of the way Gary Gygax used to write...

The game has its flaws (bizarre ass economy based on the extravagant costs of leveling a character and a tendacy to overencourage a hard-core GM vs. Players attitude) but its been my preference for Fantasy RPGing since it came out...
