John Sullivan is a highly sucessful director of comic movies in the 40s. But what he really wants to do is make movies that truly speak to the human condition. Like Capra. But when his producers point out that he's never actaully known real hardship he decides he'll travel across the country incognito and without his money. So that he can truly experiance poverty. Along the way he's joined by an out-of-work actress played by the divine Veronica Lake. And of course not everything goes the way he expects...

An enjoyable movie, if somewhat simplistic look at poverty. Especially the pre-U.S. involvement in WW2, right at the end of the depression poverty. But I'm a sucker for the stylistic dialogue patter of 40s-era movies. And Lake truly has a captivating presence...
