Apparently if Burt Reynolds has a mustache it automatically makes me see the movie as Smokey & the Bandit or The Cannonball Run. No 'stash = biting satire or southern-fried noir. Maybe thats what makes this movie acceptable but lacking a sense of depth...

Date: 2010-05-17 04:03 pm (UTC)1) Gator is the sequel to the more typical White Lightning, and you know how Burt's sequels measure against the first "chapters". Would you have even bothered to watch it if it was titled White Lightning 2?
2) It was the first movie that Burt himself directed, so he was still on the learning curve when it came to pacing and such.
3) Gator was the first time Burt worked with Jerry Reed on screen, so this was kind of a "work-up" to Smokey & The Bandit.
4) This movie was made when the nation was going through all that societal/cultural fallout following Watergate and Nixon's resignation and the political ramifications. It was "hip" to do something with the political tone that Gator had. *shrug*
