So the former roommate has offered to get me into his bi-weekly Thursday gaming group. And it is a good offer. But I'm tempted to turn him down for a couple of reasons.

1. They play a 3.x D&D game. I play in one online and I've played in them in the past, but I really just do not LIKE the system...

2. The group drinks while playing. While I'm not someone who demands people cut out table chatter and joking and just game, I do appreciate if people stay sober enough to concentrate on it. Plus the years of working the Scottsdale hotel in the middle of a club district have left with me with a distaste for drunks...

But neither of those is a total deal-breaker, they're just annoyances. And I would REALLY like a gaming group and a way to get out of the house to see other people socially...

go for a few times, and see if its okay or not. its not the end of the world to quit a gaming group.

What he said. Besides, you could offer to expose them to something other than 3.0/3.5 if you like everyone in the group individually and they can keep their heads as the booze flows freely.

That's unlikely to fly. At least until I finish the module. Sundays seems to be our "try a Different System" night. Plus, I think we have less players then too. Maybe that'd be a better fit. Want me to ask the group?

I'd ask lurker but that sounds good to me.

Two comments:

1- I think you're being harsh on 3.X But really, as long as the system does the basics (is reasonably able to handle most situations, not badly biased, and is relatively simple to understand), any system can be used as a springboard to a good game.

2. Do they drink or do they get drunk? A couple of beers isn't a problem. Getting blitzed could be annoying- your mileage may vary.

I'd say go for it. You need a group, and those points by themselves shouldn't be dealbreakers. Run with it.
