This is how the Senate vote worked out on the bill:

On a 65-34 vote, with 12 Democrats joining, the Senate passed S 3930 Thursday night after 10 hours of debate. The bill is identical to the House version passed earlier, meaning no conference committee parley will be needed.

Democrats in favor (12) - Carper (DE), Johnson (SD), Landrieu (LA), Lautenberg (NJ), Lieberman (CT), Menendez (NJ), Nelson (FK), Nelson (NE), Pryor (AR), Rockefeller (WV), Salazar (CO), Stabenow (MI).

Republicans against (1) - Chafee (RI).

I'm not sure who the abstentation was...

And here are points for the other side:

* United States Citizens are not subject to military commisions. Section 948c of the bill specifically states that only alien unlawful combatants are subject to military tribunals.

* The comic your posted earlier referred to 'violating international law'. Great. Name me one time that we've fought anyone who worked under the Geneva Convention. Iraq? Vietnam? Korea? Anyone? Look at what the Iraqi terrorists have done when they've caught our soldiers- where's the outrage about that?

* Finally, the overall debate is this: what interrogation techniques are acceptable to use and which ones aren't? It's a good debate, and a needed one. You don't like waterboarding? OK, what techniques do you find acceptable?

These interrogation methods are harsh. But they don't cause permanent injury, they aren't used when the government honestly believes that there is a smoking gun. And it appears to have worked.

The question of what is acceptable and what is not is a serious one, and needs to be debated and discussed. But saying that a tougher standard means that we've become the Nazis is ridiculous. 24 is a very popular show, and people aren't screaming that he's goes too far.
