The Great and Powerful Oz
Mar. 15th, 2013 03:05 pmWe ended up seeing the 3-d version since there wasn't a convient time for any of the un-enhanced versions. And while it didn't bother me it also didn't really add much to the movie. Which had a lot of good things going for it. A vibrant and beautiful setting. James Franco's con artist/stage magician Oz. An amusing talking monkey. What were almost actual fully formed characters for Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis to play as the Witches of the East and West...
But I was just bothered too much by the way one villain's motivation was hinged pretty much entirely on a failed romance. Or making Glinda a Princess in need of rescuing. Really the extraneous romances took away much of the enjoyment of the best parts, like the climatic confrontation. Where Oz's trickery and cunning goes up against the magic and military force of the Wicked Witches...
