The two big new favorite/must buy 'em all writers from last year look to be a pair of couples. Ilona Andrews, being the pseudonym for a married couple, and Sharon Lee & Steve Miller. Though with the latter, I bought a large portion of their back list and didn't get to them until this month...

I also seem to have discovered a giant pile of supers writers in '12. Not just ones I already knew like Paul Tobin or the latest Wild Cards' writers. But James Maxey, Marion G. Harmon, Jim Bernheimer, Peter Clines, Mur Lafferty, Ian Thomas Healey and Blake M. Petit...

And not so much a new discovery as a greater enjoyment of Seanan McGuire, who I'd known for her zombie books as Mira Gaunt, and David Drake. With Drake I tried out the first of his Lt. Leary books because it was free even though I'd hated his Hammer's Slammers books. And I got quickly hooked into his military scifi adventure series...

And by far the most enjoyable surprise of the year was Rebecca Gable's Settlers of Catan novel. I may have picked it up out of a sense of curiosity but it was an excellent bit of historical fiction...

Worst book for the year probably goes to Brian "Atomic Robo" Clevenger. He rereleased his supers novel Nuklear Age as a cheap e-book. And warned all of us fans that it was a pretty terrible work. And man, should I have believed him. That thing was just dire in its awfulness...
