lurkerwithout: (Book on bed)
May 1st: Patricia Briggs - Hunting Ground: 2nd Alpha&Omega werewolf book from Briggs. Nice use of some Arthurian mythology to set up the bad guys...

May 2nd: Eric Flint (ed) - Ring of Fire: As will soon become apparent I kind of went on a binge of Ring of Fire anthologies this month. Starting with the first "pro" one...

May 5th: Flint/DeMarce - 1634: The Bavarian Crisis: I think this is the book where DeMarce really begins to turn some of her writing tics into strengths...

Flint (ed) - Ring of Fire 2

May 6th: Flint/DeMarce - 1635: The Dreeson Incident: On the other hand the parts of this one focusing on the Jenkins family romantic back-stories seems like back-sliding for her. And the Ron/Missy stumbling about in their relationship bits were a bit too teen melodrama for me, though those could easily be Flint. His romance stuff can be..cloying? Heavy-handed? Something...

Flint (ed) - Grantville Gazette IV

May 7th: Robert Asprin/Jody Lynn Nye - Class Dis-Mythed: I think this one came out post-Asprin's death and is finished up by his friend and some time collaborator. Nope, 2005. Asprin passed away in '08. Anyway, it has Skeeve agreeing to interrupt his personal studies to take on a group of varied apprentices as a favor to his various friends...

May 8th: Flint (ed) - Grantville Gazette V

May 9th: Virginia DeMarce - 1635: Tangled Webs: Of the various short story/novellas here, I think I liked the last one about the three noble brothers best. Though thats probably because I'm a huge sucker for a good death scene...

May 10th: Raymond Feist - Fairie Tale: Not sure what it was, but this book didn't connect with me at all. I didn't really care about any of the characters, this version of the Seelie/Unseelie courts was kind of meh and the ending really just annoyed me more than anything else...

May 11th-12th: Flint (ed) - Grantville Gazette I, II and III

May 13th: Flint/Weber - 1634: Baltic War: I'd say I like the bits with Admiral Simpson best. Or maybe Harry's jailbreak from the Tower of London. Kind of a toss-up. But I'm looking forward to more with both characters in future planned books...

May 14th: Steven Gould - Helm: This really is my favorite Lost Earth colony story. Its got martial arts and espionage and military actions and last-moment heroics and really face-punchable bad guys...

May 14th-16th: Flint or Paula Goodlett (ed) - Grantville Gazette VI-X: The online versions, making them one of those rarities. Something I'll actually PAY to own as a .pdf...

May 16th: Charlie Huston - The Mystic Arts of Removing All Signs of Death: Such a great book. You've got dead body clean-up, truly incompetant smugglers who still manage to be scary mofos, black humor and some excellent work showing people suffering from PTSD...

May 19th: John Ajvide Lindquist - Let the Right One In: I have to say Oskar is even more creepy and messed up in the book version. I am not hopeful about anyone managing to make a decent Americanized version of this...

May 17th-23rd: Paula Goodlett (ed) - Grantville Gazette XI-XXIX: Is that how you do 29 in Roman numerals? I think it is...

May 26th: Huston - Sleepless: Excellent near-future dystopia. I've mentioned it before, but the current crop of cyberpunk is all about the biologicals and gene-crafting over the cybernetics. Still plenty of "evil" megacorp types though...

May 28th: George Alec Effinger - Budayeen Nights: I actually thought this was the omnibus edition collecting the three novels when I ordered this. But its an anthology of Budayeen related short pieces, including the uncompleted stuff by Effinger that would have been part of the potential 4th and 5th books...

May 29th: Lois McMaster Bujold - A Civil Campaign: This book isn't just my favorite Vorkosigan book, its probably my favorite of any of her books...

May 31st: Douglas Coupland - Girlfriend in a Coma: While I like the set-up portions of this one, its when the "Big Event" happens that I just lose interest...

AC/DC's "Thunderstruck". Not that my school years fit with the song in any way. Its just an awesome song to serve as background to whatever someone does...
