April 2010 Book List
May. 3rd, 2010 07:17 pm4/1: Raymond Feist - Wrath of a Mad God: Finishes up the Shadow War as the Conclave of Shadows fights to keep the alien Dasati and their mad god from overwhelming the Tsurani homeworld of Kelewan...
4/3: Christopher Moore - Bite Me: The final part of Moore's Slacker Vampire trilogy. With the dangers of vampire kitty cats and fixing of most of what left me cold in the second book...
4/5: Jim Hines (ed) - Heroes in Training: A collection of short stories about young would-be heroes. A couple good stories, but the rest were a bit below average...
4/6: Andrew Vachss - Choice of Evil: The 11th Burke book, with the anti-hero getting involved in hunting down a serial killer who preys on homophobes after his girlfriend is killed at a gay rally...
4/7: Diane Duane - The Wizard's Holiday: Kit and Anita get a much needed vacation as part of a Wizard's cultural exchange, with a trio of alien Wizard's staying with Anita's family. Of course even while on a break a Wizard is never truly off duty...
4/9: Vachss - Dead & Gone: After a near fatal ambush Burke goes even deeper underground before going on the hunt for whichever old enemy had him set up...
4/10: Duane - Wizard's at War: A new tactic by the Enemy leaves the adult Wizard's slowly losing their magic and memories. Forcing Kit, Nita and the other young Wizards to fight alone...
4/11: Elmore Leonard - Out of Sight: I've read this one before, but hadn't picked it up until recently. Most notable for me in being the basis for one of the few movies I actually like Jennifer Lopez in...
4/13: Jane Yolen/Midori Snyder - Except the Queen: Modern fantasy, with a pair of fairy sisters banished to the mortal world for revealing that the Queen had taken a human lover. Separated and stripped of much of their magic's the two both struggle to adapt while also being drawn to help different young humans...
4/16: Neal Asher - Shadow of the Scorpion: Ian Cormac was a child during the end of the Human/Prador War that cost him his father. Joining the military he finds that even with War over human separatists can be just as deadly a threat...
4/18: Steve Hamilton - The Lock Artist: Michael was the survivor of a tragedy at the age of eight that left him mute. Struggling to fit in he discovers he has a talent for locks. One that leads to him working as a premiere safe-cracker...
4/20: Glen Cook - Cruel Zinc Melodies: Giant bugs, "ghosts" and family squabbles among the wizard elite are the focus of the latest Garret Files book. I'm looking forward to seeing if Cook goes from Chandler-esque to something more like Robert Parker or maybe Hammett's Nick & Nora in the next book...
4/21: Feist - Rides a Dread Legion: From the Tsurani to the Emerald Queen's Hordes to the Mad God of the Dasati. Now Midkemia and the Conclave what looks to be their most dangerous foe yet in the vast armies of the Demon Realm...
4/24: Joseph Selby - Wanted: Chosen One: Though in need of some polish, I truly enjoyed being a reader for Joe's second novel. Here is hoping that he finds an agent for either of them so I can get print copies of the finished work...
4/28: Cook - Lord of the Silent Kingdom: I probably mentioned it when I read the first book in this series, but it bears repeating. This is so far the only one of Cook's epic fantasy series I really enjoy. But I wish he'd include a fucking map of the setting. Fantasy series need maps dammit!
Patricia Briggs - Silver Borne: The latest Mercy Thompson book from Briggs. With Mercy and her pack dealing both with a traitor with-in and a rogue and kind of crazy Faerie Queen...
4/30: Robert Parker - Split Image: Sadly what may be one of the final books from Parker before his death. The title works both in referring to the twin sisters who are a central plot point as well as how the narrative of the book is split between Boston P.I. Sunny Randall and Paradise police chief Jesse Stone...
Total books: 17
