The Apartment
Jun. 8th, 2009 10:59 amDirector Billy Wilder's '61 Oscar winner features the late, great Jack Lemmon as an accountant at a large firm. One who lets various mid-level executives borrow his apartment as someplace to bring their on-the-side girlfriends. In exchange they make sure he gets glowing recommendations for promotion. Which draws the suspicion of Fred McMurray, the head of personnel. Who then makes sure he gets time with the apartment for his girl as well. Of course Lemmon's character eventually finds out that McMurray's girl is the elevator operator he'd been crushing on, played by Shirley MacLaine...
Lemmon's natural charm is what really carries the film, with the story being fairly slight. Its also interesting to see a movie that would be unlikely to get as much (if any) Oscar attention from modern voters...
