So yes, as I mentioned, flush with Christmas cash and a paycheck I managed to get down to my comic's shop and clear out my subscription box. A plethero of comics!
Starting with a pretty disapointing DC Universe Holiday Special. First its basically all Christmas stories. Seriously Big Two, if you're going to NOT include any other winter holidays then just call the damn book a Christmas Special. Not that it matters much given how most of the stories are average at best. Not to shocking given that the only "name" talent on writing is DiDio doing an Aquaman saves Jesus story, Paul Dini doing a Good King Wenceslas/Batman mash-up and Joe Kelly with a fairly sappy Commisioner Gordon thing. There is some nice art though. A Frank Quietly cover. A JLA Christmas Office party drawn by Kevin Maguire. Rafael Albuquerque doing the art for a pretty weak Huntress at her civilian job child abuse short. But that doesn't really offset that this book was six bucks. Very much not really worth it...
Top 10 Season Two continues to exceed expectations. Ha keeps delivering the art and the sight-gags. And Cannon keeps managing to be a writer who CAN follow up on one of Alan Moore's stories well. This issue advances at least four stories and gives us the Red Ring street gang...
The final Knights of the Dinner Table plugs away at the Hard8 story-line and continues to push along with the new UT+1's adventures in Bag World. Though, ONCE AGAIN, the new movie guy sucks. Really, this is NOT just because Noah's a friend. The new dude spends two paragraphs talking about the last Indiana Jones movie might have had a few faults and then jumps into several pages of generic "tips" on running Indy based games. Great. Thanks. According to his bio, the guy has some writing credits for Margaret Weis Productions game publisher. At least work how you're Be Inspired By A Movie thing will work for a specific system...
Also with a Christmas theme is The Punisher XMas one-shot. Where Frank shoots mobsters while dressed as Santa. Writer Jason Aaron (of Ghost Rider and Scalped) delivers some truly horrific levels of violence, well-illustrated by Roland Boshci and colorist Daniel Brown. Its very much a MAX Punisher what with the murdering of babies and what not...
On a less grim note there's Wolverine First Class. Where Wolverine gets bitten by a werewolf. And then has a fight with Jack "Werewolf-By-Night" Russel. Honestly if you don't want a comic with Werewolferine than you just don't like comics...
Patsy Walker: Hellcat has Patsy beating up a yeti and "rescuing" the missing magic princess girl with the help from a bridge made of many rabbits. Really thats the only part of the story I can easily explain. Oh and Ms. Hellcat punches out a teen-age girl. And who hasn't always wanted to do that?
The latest Nova has a brief partial New Warriors original members reunion. You know of the ones who aren't crazy or dead. Plus Rich's little brother starts his new job as a Nova Centurion...
Savage Dragon has family reunions and the reveal of the final fate of Dragon's wife Jennifer...
On Brit the titular hero faces off against his crazed other-dimensional twin and much property damage is involved...
And then its Invincible, which is the first half of a cross-over with Kirkman's super-hero werewolf book. Two werewolf themed books in one month. Is December the offical werewolf month?
Whats odd about that? No werewolves in either this month's Angel: After the Fall (which is an issue that will probably make all those stupid Connor haters happy. Jerks) or Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which is a dream sequence of a Buffy cartoon set around Season One or Two. And is shockingly a story written by Jeph Loeb that manages to make sense when read alongside exsisting comics. Weird). I mean Angel's werewolf ex is IN the current series but she isn't in this issue. Maybe Whedon didn't know it was Werewolf Month?
Wormwood Gentleman Corpse: Down the Pub is a one-shot collecting some previously published Wormwood shorts. Older ones without Phoebe, even though she's featured on what is a truly gorgeous (keeping in mind who the artist is) cover...
I don't know which is more terrorfying. The Sam & Max-esque sociopaths in cartoon head masks chasing #5 or a chimp dressed up as Marilyn Monroe. Nope, its the chimp because of the happy birthday song. *shudder*
And we end with FEAR Agent where a psychotic twin of Heath rides into the town of Heaven and commits many acts of nasty evil.
