Quantum of Solace
Nov. 26th, 2008 09:53 pmOk, first off, thats still a stupid title. Even allowing that the new SPECTRE (as revealed about the midpoint of the movie) calls itself Quantum, still dumb. But other than that I found this new Bond movie even better than the last. Some reviewers say that its too "Bourne" like with its action sequences. I agree with that, in that its action sequences (like those in the Bourne franchise) are really good. But how is that bad? This is fucking BOND. This isn't The Good German or The Quiet American. Have they not SEEN other movies in the franchise? And yes they have much of the same frenetic pace and physically jarring moves that the Bourne movies brought. But I think thats just because that franchise set the bar for what action has to aim for. And Quantum of Solace hits the mark by far on that one...
I also like both Bond girls more than Vesper in the last movie. And I think in-between the action, this latest Bond actually gave both Dench and Craig more to work with as actors. So excellent movie...

New Comics Day 11/26
Nov. 26th, 2008 10:10 pmMan, I'm actually GLAD Diamond is still shorting my comics shop on that Empowered volume and the newest issue of Mouse Guard. It meant I could buy myself lunch. Still one of the most massive pull list weeks for me that I can remember...
Starting with the final issue of Templesmith's Welcome to Hoxford, which was actually a bit too hard to read. The glossy paper really wasn't working very well for Templesmith's heavy and sparse inks. But still a nice creepy ending, always tough with a horror book...
Sadly I have to complain about this month's issue of Proof as well. It just doesn't do enough to advance any of the three ongoing plots, though it does have barghests fighting sewer 'gators...
Savage Dragon wraps up the Solar Man plot and seemingly adds most of the Golden Age of comics to the Image 'verse. Or at least the parts that interact with Dragon...
Brit is mostly back-story this month, explaining how and why the other world's Brit became a mad despot. Though it does set things up for a Brit vs. Brit fight next issue...
And finally from Image is a new one-shot of Jason Pearson's Body Bags. Its been awhile, and this story isn't QUITE as good as the original mini, but its 40+ pages of father/daughter ultra-violent bounty huntering for a measly 5 bucks so who's complaining? Hopefully Pearson doesn't take as long to get out another story...
Moving to DC we've got the soon-to-be-cancelled Blue Beetle. With some Teen Titan guest stars. Worth it for Peacemaker's complaints about working with teen-agers alone...
DMZ finishes up its brief stop at Staten Island, where tensions are running exceedingly high between the "friendly" Free State and U.S. forces over some missing ricin...
And Jack of Fables starts off the battle between Bookburner andReviseJack's forces. And the saddest imaginary adventures of Mini-Babe the Blue Ox of all...
Man, when did the last issue of Buffy the Vampire Slayer actually come out? It feels like a while. This issue wraps up the Fray guest-starring arc and a sadly expected Twillight member is revealed. I mean I figured he'd be the guy beneath the mask, but having him as a member isn't any shock...
Dark Horse also puts out the first issue of Gerard Way's The Umbrella Academy: Dallas. As before, I may not like My Chemical Romance one way or another, but the dude can write some awesome comics. I mean this one has the younger Academy members having to fight a national monument. AGAIN. Plus the rest picks up right off from where the last series ended...
And we'll finish with Marvel. Starting with Wolverine: First Class. Which has Wolverine going to Shang Chi to learn Kung Fu mastery so that he can defeat Sabretooth and rescue Kitty. Oh, HELLS YEAH...
Then its Nova where the new Nova Corps recruits are introduced as Rich has them start out by helping to clean up some of the after effects of the Skrull Invasion. Oh and fight Taboo, the Thing From the Swamp. Which is made even better since one of the new girls is a cousin to Fin Fang Foom. First Groot, then a call out to FFF and then Taboo? Marvel so needs to be bringing out more of their stable of Big Damn Monsters...
And speaking of Groot we finish with Guardians of the Galaxy. After Quill's team falls apart when they learn about the whole brain-washing thing, Rocket forms a new group to try and keep fixing things. Groot! Bug! Mantis! Major Victory! And the former team-mate of the last is being interrogated by Cosmo, who tries to convince him that she should be freed to save time and space. Plus some set-up for the "Reign of Kings" Event thats the next big thing. So far the space Event/cross-overs have been good. And resulted in Nova from the first and GoG from the second. So maybe this one will also be good?
