New Comics Day 3/26
Mar. 26th, 2008 08:32 pmOn the sad side I forgot to grab the final for Damage Control for my stack, so I'll have to get it next week. On the plus side, my reorder on Jack Staff finally came in. With plenty of wird characters with slowly intersecting stories. Like the dangerous Mr. Punch. Or Zipper Nolan, former boy dream adventurer, now a cynical police detective. Or even blonde bombshell Lynda Jones, Calendar Girl...
Then we get a new issue of Proof. With big game poachers in Africa. And by big game, we mean Mokolembe, the legendary living dinosaurs of Central Africa...
Also this week is a new Savage Dragon, with Larsen throwing in same characters created by a friend of his from waaaaaaaaaaay back when he was on the fanzine Graphic Fantasy. Plus checking in on Mr. Glum, Solar-Man, She-Dragon and Mako...
Next its over to Marvel for the good, the adequate and the "Why the Hell am I buying this?". For the good, we've got Fred Van Lente's Power Pack: Day One with art by Gurihiru. Van Lente retells the Pack's origin, using the context of a sleep-over with Franklin Richards. Plus it features a back-up of science lessons from Power Pack, written by Van Lente and drawn by the always adorable & awesome Colleen Coover...
The adequate is this month's X-Men: First Class. Sadly this solo Cyclops story is just missing something. Though the opening, that shows WHY the rest of the team can't help is amusing. See when hunting chupacabre in Mexico, Scott at least knew to bring bottled water...
And then we have New Warriors. So terrible. Ok, the art is decent. Medina seems to have settled on some body types for the characters. But the writing is just as dismal as before. Poor dialogue, plot points being dropped from out of nowhere and nearly random character motivations...
And then with DC we've got the mostly good, the pretty good and the hella awesome. Starting with a Jack of Fables with no Jack. Instead featuring the Pathetic Fallacy, Alice and Wicked John attempt to put on a show of Hamlet (pre-Great Escape). Its ok. I like the audience reactions at least...
Then its the second issue of Aragones & Evanier on the Spirit. No Ploog this time, instead the art is Paul Smith. The Spirit has to solve a murderous case of diamond smuggling that somehow involves a beauty contest in Paris. The story is most definitely a step up from last month's revenge/murder mystery...
After that we finish up with DC with John Rogers last (hopefully only temporally) issue of Blue Beetle. Jaime and his family continue to battle the Reach and then some "old" friends show up to lend a hand.
Milagro: I know you. My brother calls you the crazy one.
Guy: That's right, baby girl. I'm the crazy one.
Reach soldier: We're dead.
HURRY BACK ROGERS! Do not leave Jaime with Pfiefer for too long...
And lastly we finish up with Knights of the Dinner Table. Where Brian manages to pull one over on B.A. at the last moment in a totally classic "Brian Moment". Plus the domestic life of Bob and Sheila. Also Spoony's review on Uwe Boll's most recent "movie". And a sweet map of a lizard man lair. Plus various other articles and strips...
