New Comics Day
Oct. 5th, 2007 06:16 pmAnd New Comics Day is finally here. Well new this week. And some older stuff as well. Really a giant fucking pile o' comics. In fact I may have gone a bit overboard and possibly passed my budget. For the month. Luckily it was a fat paycheck thanks to those training hours last week. Plus, how could I resist picking up this:

Its Fone Bone! In plush form!
But back to the comics, starting with some older stuff. Got the Bthulhu Tales Tainted anthology from Boom! Studios. And its uneven as always. Some flat stories, a couple dark but funny ones, but nothing that really hits it out of the park...
Then I got the last two issues of Maintenance from Oni. The book's first multi-issue arc isn't as good as the previous three. But still you have the maintenance men for a mad science lab blackmailed into going The Incredible Journey on a toilet. Plus a return cameo of Cobra McPunch the Man-Shark...
Also last week's over-sized return of Savage Dragon. The actual parts with Dragon are somewhat brief. But, while the art was a little lack luster, the Rock House Diner section was fun. Zeek, Joey Finkleberry and a mess of the Freak Underground regulars are always a welcome read...
Then I finally got around to grabbing the Marvel Adventures Giant-size The Avengers from a while back. The Marvel Adventures stuff is the Marvel alt-universe where the characters are actually still FUN. They're not grim jerks like 616 or broody jerks like Ultimate. Plus this one-shot features the MA versions of the Agents of A.T.L.A.S. and Kang. AND the Avengers fight T-Rexes. So sweet...
Now to the stuff from this week. Starting with Jack of Fables where more hints are dropped to the origins of Gary aka the Pathetic Fallacy, Mr. Revise and Kevin Thorne. Also the secret origin that links Jack and Wicked John...
And we've got the pulp action of Lobster Johnson with deadly cultists, Nazi cyborgs and some really big snakes...
Then I grabbed The Vinyl Underground on the recomendation of
ferris_dabler. It looks to be going for a young, sexy supernatural horror/mystery thing. Not sure how well it works yet. And I'm not really familiar with the creative team (Si Spencer writer, Simon Gane penciller, Cameron Stewart inks). But I don't really like Gane's pencils that much. Still I'll give another issue or two to see where it goes...
Then got a new IDW Transformer's book after a long hiatus while they put out mostly Marvel reprints and movie tie-ins. The Transformers: Devastation starts a new arc and looks to begin integrating some of the characters from the Spotlight issues...
After that its time for female bonding on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Faith makes a new friend. And beats up some gargoyles. Oh and Willow tries to have a frank talk about sex with Dawn...
Next we go to Super-Villain Team-Up Modok's 11. And yes every other review is right. This issue fetures VERY little MODOK. It does have Living Laser begging the new Mandarin to beat on him some more. Which is very disturbing. Plus it ends with ANOTHER guest-star last seen in Agents of A.T.L.A.S. Plus a Chris Giarrusso back-up of Mini Marvels...
And we finish with Metal Men where we find that the origin of the Death Metal Men. It involves Super Science. And Alchemy. And Crazy Ass Awesomeness...
