Managed our first session of Aces & Eights tonight. Well, we got thru the character creation part anyway. The system itself is basically skill based, though advancement looks to be a giant pain and I am talking to [profile] spoonyone about house ruling in something similar to how Chaosium does skill advancement in CoC. The combat rules, when we actually get to try them out, involve dice, playing cards and a hit location plastic overlay thing that goes with a target cut-out. And character creation is still that mesh of random stat generation and build points from HackMaster. Though they've nerfed the ability to flawmonger for build points. Which given that I never abused the system but suck at random stat generation is slightly annoying...

I eventually worked up a decent starting build of stats and then ended up rolling up a below lower lower class rural kid, kicked out by his family. And so was created Bobby Joe McCoy, youngest son of Missouri farmers. Who at the age of 15 fell in love with a Hatfield and married her. Leading to ANOTHER flare up of their family feud, several deaths (including his young wife) and Bobby Joe being forced onto the road. And so he journeys to Muskegee in the disputed portion of Northern Mexico, fifty cents to his name, the clothes on his back and a vow to never love again...

Lilly is a housewife out at the opera with her lover. Felice spots her while there with her girlfriend, Lilly's nanny. The two are drawn to each other and eventually begin a relationship and fall in love. Of course this is Berlin during the Allied counter-invasion of Europe, with Lilly's husband being a Nazi officer on the Russian front and Felice being secretly Jewish things don't work out that well...

The movie is based on the memoirs of Lilly Wust. Both main actresses (Juliane Kohler/Lilly and Maria Schrader/Felice) turn in stellar performances, as does the supporting cast. Plus, like many German movies, the lighting and cinematography help heighten the mood at every turn. An excellent movie, if you don't mind tragedies...
