Recently [profile] shaenon posted a link to a "discussion" on some comics fan-forum (John Byrne's maybe? I forget). It was basically some guy asking for comics to give to his girlfriend to get her into comics. And then of course he got the standard list of Comics Chicks Dig. A few people did try and find out more about the girlfriend's tastes to try and tailor their recomendations. But mostly it was the standard list of Girl Accesible comics. Not that those are automatically bad. I mean I'd recomend stuff like Gaiman's Sandman, Willingham's Fables, Jeff Smith's Bone or Terry Moore's Strangers in Paradise to anyone regardless of gender, age or even species...

Me, if I actually dated, would just push the girl towards my long boxes and shelves of trades and tell her to browse them and make her own decisions. Maybe I'd recomend a few places to start based on her tastes, but I'd trust that if we're romantically linked then we have some commanality of tastes to start with. Unless it was just sexual. Then I guess I'd point her to the drawers where the porn is stashed...

But thats a moot point, since I don't date and have no real interest in dating. But there are probably guys out there still totally in the dark as to what to test out on female types in regards to comics. And of course I realize that there are women who read my journal (Wow!). And some of them READ COMICS! *Total Shock*. Hell, some of them CREATE comics! *TOTAL DISBELIEF AS MIND IS BLOWN*

So ladies, what comics DO you read?

Just finished watching the final disc of the second set of this old series. An older BBC series about what is essentially MI-6 and its SIS division of elite agents known as "Sandbaggers". The series is credited as the major inspiration for Greg Rucka's Queen & Country series. As with the first set, the parallels between the two story sets is easy to spot...

This second set deals less with fighting the evil commie spies and more with Jr. Director Burnside's dealing with his own sides bureaucracy and rivalries. As well as plots by allies like the CIA and whatever the name of the West German agency was. There is an interesting sequence where CIA: London head Ross goes off on a rant about how the FBI orchestrated the assassinations of JFK and MLK. Kind of odd seeing JFK conspiracy theories coming from a British show...

This set lacks any of the really woah moments of the first one, but is still a fascinating look into Cold War era espionage...
