Gore Verbansky's The Ring

and The Da Bueller Code

This book is really, really, REALLY long. I'm only about a 1/3 of the way thru it. Its kind of like if Dickens had decided to write contemporary fantasy. Except without the profound sense of dullness that Dickens gives me...

So in this week's Thieves' World game Brendan's mage decided to put an end to Tempus' public execution. And so he buffed up and got ready to fireball his gonemaddedness. When he gets interupted by Cime (Tempus' sister). She tells him to hold off for a couple minutes and she'll make sure ol' Thalesy don't get up again. So after a couple minutes of insane ranting, Brendan makes the wall go boom. And then runs for his next casting spot, while Tempus' burned form begins stalking him. Then he botches the next fireball and ends up heaving against a wall while Cime runs up to her brother. And ganks him in the eyes with her diamond hairpins of doom. Goodnight Tempus. She then d-doors over to Brendan and leans in close. And ganks him in the throat with her weapons...

Poor Brendan. He'd forgotten that Cime hates mages more than ANYTHING else. And the rest of us just kept giggling at him whenever he'd been flirting with her. So he started rolling up a new character, a Survivor, which is a sort of street fighter type that replaces the monk in the setting...

Meanwhile the rest of us are resting up from the last sessions major fight. And we decide after some failed attempts to find a Lyzerene Adept for Miles' gimped leg to start ambushing Sacred Banders and Stepsons. Vriese, my Nisibisi barb/ranger will lure the targets to the ambush site while wearing a Hawkmask and shouting insults. Our first ambush goes off perfectly, with a pair of the low-level banders getting cut to pieces in only a few rounds. The second time around, the pair of mercs summon help before entering the fray. So we end up facing off against 4 Bander mercs and 2 Stepsons (who are actual Sacred Band prestige class and higher in level). Thanks to my rage ability, effective use of flanking and Brendan's chick brawler jumping into the fight we come out on top...

After that we loot the bodies, stack their severed heads in a pile and head back to our hideout in the Maze (a temple of Theba). And we decide to wrap early and discuss what we'll do next week for game. Taking down Tempus put a kibosh on Spoony's current story-arc so he wants some time to figure out where to take the campaign next...

So next week I'll be running a West End Star Wars game. Set during the New Hope/Empire Strikes Back period. So far Brendan looks likely to play a burned-out alky jedi and Spoony is leaning towards running a droid. Matt and Miles hadn't expressed any preferences for future character choices. Now to go thru my game books and flesh out the beginning adventure and some basic campaign ideas...
