New Comics Day
Oct. 19th, 2005 04:46 pmLets start this by getting the worst out of the way.
Top 10: Beyond the Fartherst Precint. This new series has none of the spark or charm of the original series or the two spin-offs. The characters, both new and old, feel two-dimensional and bland. The major storyline is full of plot holes (what kind of pseudo-American police force doesn't have a union?) and abrubt jumps in motivation. And the cover is feels more like a rip-off of the classic Spidey "I quit" rather than an homage. Just avoid this one, I know I plan to from now on...
Supreme Power: Hyperion seems to be moving faster than its Nighthawk companion book, but I'm not really digging Jurgens' art on it. And Dr. Emil comes off as more an annoying dick, rather than a deadly villian...
Astro City: Dark Age comes to a good strong finish for its first story arc. And I love the cover on this one. Stark and brutal...
Next is the Zero issue for the new iDW Transformers. First off I'm digging E.J. Su's robots. And of the various covers, I decided to go with the Optimus/Megatron brawl one. And though I'm sad I'll never get to see where the G1 storylines would have gone, I'm looking forward to seeing what new directions this new team has planned for the Robots in Disguise...
Lastly got the newest Dork Tower. No big laughs, and some stuff might have meant more to me if I were an indy comic book writer. But I still like Matt's drunken Ennis-like muse...
