Dustin Hoffman plays recent parolee and career thief Max Dembo. After his most recent release he attempts to go straight. He finds a place to live, gets a job and finds a girl. But a power trip by his parole officer (the always good M. Emmet Walsh) fucks all that up. Well, except for the girl (played by the sweet Theresa Russell). After a very amusing revenge on his P.O; Dembo returns to his criminal ways. Getting help from other old friends and ex-cons played by Gary Busey and Harry Dean Stanton. And of course things eventually go bad. 'Cause crooks are mostly stupid and greedy...
The movie also has a young Kathy Bates in a small role as Busey's wife. It took me awhile to recognize her, as she's apparently put on a lot of weight over the years...
